Border Track and the Pyrenees MEDIUM / HARD

Ngarkat Conservation Park SA & Pyrenees Avoca, VIC

See more trips

The Border Track has always been on my 'bucket list', as has the Pyrenees area near Avoca. So a couple of mates are joining me & I thought there might be a few here ( 3 spots available) who are also interested in driving this iconic track.

I know there a quite a few trips running over the Easter Break and the dates I have chosen will not be suitable for most, but my rationale for heading up a few days prior to the easter hollies are;

1. Border Track reopens on Wed April 1st & hopefully we will be one of the 1st, if not the 1st, group of vehicles on the track.

2. Dont like going anywhere on the main days over Easter as everywhere is BUSY BUSY BUSY....frown.

So the plan of attack is to either meet at the BP as mentioned above OR at the BP Pinaroo

(7.5 hrs from Melbourne) to refuel & pay required camping fee/permit to enter the area. From here, we will head to Pine Hut Soak Campground (toilets) for the night. Next day the adventure will begin & Wednesday night we will camp at Red Bluff Campground. Thursday we will complete the remainder of the Border Track then make our way to the Pyrenees, (aprox 4 hr drive from Teloplea Downs) & more than likely set up camp mid afternoon at Glenpatrick Reserve for a couple of nights. Friday & part of Saturday will be driving the various tracks around the area & either head home Sat arvo or 1st thing Sunday morning.

This trip will be either tents, swags, rooftop tents etc (no camper trailers) & everyone must be self sufficent with water/food etc as there is no drinkable water on the track. Also no pets or fires are allowed on the Border Track, so you will need to leave your '4 legged friends' at home. Fires are allowed at Red Bluff Campground, weather permitting. All vehicles must be in good mechanical condition & each vehicle must have recovery gear & uhf radio. A sandflag would be preferred but I do have one as I believe at least the lead vehicle must display one.

Whilst I do not mean to offend, if you are a 4wder who feels the need to have to' proove how good you are' by driving as far as you can in 2wd before engaging 4wd, drive at 'warp factor' speed & have no interest in at least attempting to minimize damage to tracks etc etc, in other words like being a hoon, this is not a trip for you.

As I mentioned earlier, dates are probably not suitable to most so I dont expect any interest, but if you are and you have any questions/queries, do not hesitate to ask.

Cheers

Allan

Hopefully Kelvin will be able to update my trip, but it is a maximum of 6 vehicles & I already have 3 going, so again 3 spots available.

No Jase, it opens on April 1st. It used to be closed from November until May to coincide with the Fire Danger Period but I think it was last year that they changed the opening date to April 1st along with reducing the fire ban to April 15th.

This is some of the info regarding the Border Track

Please note that access to the 29km Border Track is restricted one-way from north to south. The Border Track is open from 1 April to 31 October and is closed during the Fire Danger Season. Contact the DEWNR Murraylands Office before attempting this journey.

    Hi Allan,
You can easily edit the trip. There is a blue "Edit Trip" button on the right. You can change the number of vehicle allowed.
    Hope this helps.

It has been a while since we crossed paths Allan. A day trip with the Pajero forum I believe was the last time.
I'm pretty keen to come along for the Border track. I just need to confirm getting time off work first. I'll have my 7 year son with me, so I hope somebody else with kids can make it also.

Great to see you can make it Stuart; will be great to catch up again. Not sure if any other children will be coming, but we can make your son in charge of 'recoveries'...

Really looking forward to this trip Allan, its also been on my bucket list. Perfect timing!
It would be great if other kids could come along, it would make it more fun for my 7yr old son Nathan. Never the less he's an experienced 4wder/camper since he was 1yr old. He's done a 9 week trip with me to Cape York in 2012, Fraser Island, countless trips to Vic High country & everywhere in between, he loves his 4wding & camping & day trips.
Question regarding sleeping arrangements tents, rooftop tent, swags etc. What are you guys sleeping in? I realise swags or rooftop tents are quicker & faster to set up & repack in the morning, but since I have Nathan with me, a swag is no go, I do have a Oztrail tourer9 canvas single pole set up tent. You guys might have to wait 1/2 hour for me to pack it up every morning, is that ok? I been looking at a reason to buy a roof top tent

I am going on this trip and will be tenting it so don't be to concerned about morning pack up we generally have a pretty relaxed approach as long as we aren't all standing around for ages every morning

As Matt said, dont stress Stuart as at this stage I will be the only one in a swag & the other guys will be in tents.Usually takes me longer to pack up the swag than them packing up tents....grrrr.

Am sure your son will have a great time being a 'seasoned 4wd passenger'. Wont be too long before he starts asking; "Can I have a drive Dad?"...lol

Called Murraylands Parks office just to confirm that track will be reopening on April 1st. Got a positive answer unless major weather issues occur re; fire or heavy rain etc & was told we have picked the best time to go as Easter wil be a 'madhouse' there.

Am so looking forward to this trip; lets hope the weather will be kind for us.

Me too Matt. Paj is pretty well packed & just need to get a few of the 'essentials'; food & grog. According to weather forecast it is going to be warm on both Tuesday & Wednesday (27 & 33) so think the sand will be bloody soft. Possible light shower on Thursday when we make our way to the Pyreness so with any luck it will at least reduce the dust.
