Woods Point Beginners Weekend trip EASY

Big River State forest area, VIC

See more trips
Running a beginners/easy weekend away for those new to 4x4ing or for anyone with lesser experience. A good chance to dust off that 4xr4 or to get that first or second trip under your belt and build confidence in both your rig and your driving skills.
Plan to meet up opposite the Warburton Shell servo at 7.30pm then convoy up to Snowy Road camp about an hour out of Warburton.
Stay there Friday night, then travel over to Woods Point Saturday, all on well formed tracks, set up camp at Scott’s Reserve then get some of the obligatory photos of you and your truck at the iconic Woods Point servo. (No fuel there though the servo closed many years ago)
Sunday morning travel through the upper reaches of the Thompson Dam catchment area, view the diversion tunnel (nice spot for a swim) then troop up to the Woods Point road and home via gravel road and the Cumberland Junction.
You will need low range so no SUV’s please !
You must have a snatch strap, shackles ,and rated recovery points though. Preferably also a winch dampening blanket too. Standard tyres will be fine.
Not expecting to get stuck anywhere as this is a well known route but ‘be prepared’ as they say.
So food and fuel for 2 nights and 2 days, a full tank of fuel from Warburton will be enough.
Pace will be comfortable for anyone new to 4x4ing this is NOT a test your rig and ego weekend.
Look forward to seeing you, although no pets or young kids under 12 please.
Any questions please ask.
Prefer to keep spots open for those who haven’t done this trip but an experienced Tail End Charlie would be great.

Wow that filled up quickly - 1 day to be exact... Thanks to all for joining and for Pauly going tail end, means we have coverage front and back. Pauly knows this route off by heart so we’re well covered.
Thanks to all for joining this will be a great weekend for those newer or less sure of Bush tracks. It’s all Point and steer, no car swallowing ruts or wheel lifts we can stop for morning tea and or lunch on the tracks look forward to meeting you all
I’ll be in a white 80 series Landcruiser with a white roof top tent so will see you all on the Friday opposite the servo. Please be on time as a courtesy to everyone else on the trip so we’re not standing in a car park instead of being in convoy heading for the hills !

    Thanks for organising, Alex.
I'm new here and this will be my 2nd 4x4 trip in my SWB Patrol that I've had for a few years but haven't had anyone to go on trips with.
It will be good to finally get out and have someone with experience nearby!

    Ash.

A week and a bit to go - look forward to seeing you all on Friday- any issues if we make it maybe a 6.30pm meet up as it gives us more time to relax and get a fire going Friday night.
    Cheers.

I should be fine to get there by 6:30pm, but depends how I'm going at work. I knock off at 5:30pm (from port melbourne) but can usually leave early if I want as long there's nothing urgent to be fixed. If any dramas I'll call you on the mobile Alex.

Dennis - I'm in Maribyrnong but not sure if I'll be coming from Port Melbourne or Maribyrnong, depends if I'm working from home or the office.

It will be tight for me (driving from the cbd) but I guess I can meet you at the Campground if by the time you leave I’m not at the servo.

As per google’s calculations, should take me 1;20h from work to Warburton.

    Thoughts about weekend weather?
Friday lots of rain - forecast between 25 and 40mm...
    Showers Saturday and Sunday.

Last trip that I did with Alex around that area the wipers were more time on than the low range, pouring rain all day. And I absolutely loved every second of it!

Todays forecast has rain Friday but cloudy 22 on Friday and cloudy 18 Sunday, but no rain both days fingers crossed.
Just to reassure everyone even if it tips down Friday, the planned tracks are good with a rocky base so we wont be having a mud bath and stuck on hills or sliding down ravines. Fingers crossed anyway for now !

All good mate - not keen on a mud bath... neither on the tracks nor, especially, in camp grounds...
Let's se how much comes down on Friday, might give an idea how sorry the land will be...

Gday everyone! Getting very excited for the trip, rains gonna make it even more fun. Question about the camp sites - Are there onsite bbqs/firepits or should we bring like a little portable bbq?

When it’s first in best dressed there’s no guarantee as to where we’ll stay or what facilities are available so please plan on full self sufficiency
Bonus if not required but please plan for it cheers
