Barkly River Jeep Track to Woods Point to Walhalla MEDIUM / HARD

Mt Skene to Walhalla, VIC

See more trips

Dates are locked in but subject to weather.  Rain or wet weather means I dont want to be stuck on the side of Mount Skene so trip will be postponed if necessary.

I've put in for leave on the Friday might just do a Woods Point weekend if conditions go south.

Basic outline is to work from Barkly River Jeep track off the side of Mt. Skene, over to Woods Point and through to Walhalla over the next few days.

Walhalla isn't the destination, but we'll be heading that way to do some of the more interesting tracks along the way. Finish up wherever the tracks take us on Sunday.

Will be meeting up Thursday night and on the trails from Friday through to Sunday so most of us will need to take Friday off work as its doubtful we'll do it over Labour day weekend, too many people on the road and camping in the good spots.

Will need self sufficency for three days, food, fuel and water plus snacks.

You "MUST" have at least a rear diff lock, not LSD, twin locked is even better, MUST have a working winch and enough recovery gear for self recovery if required.

All Terrain or Mud Terrain tyres, no road or highyway pattern tyres, decent clearance, and have experience in steep rocky terrain which doesn't mean "I send it to get up hills'.......          It is slow terrain that requires wheel placement and throttle control over right boot.

Plus my Hilux only has 60kW so I can't send it anyway.

So for those who enjoy technical driving it should be a cracking trip, early stop if we pass a good spot with relaxing afternoons = plenty of time to set up and refresh and bench race the day just passed. Good campfires weather permitting, and lots of tall tales makes for enjoyable evenings.

A quiet camp at night no doof doof and respect for others is the only other prerequiste.

Everyone to take their own rubbish home responsibly.

Hope you can join or show interest.

Your comment about having diff locks as being mandatory is unfounded. I know plenty of cars and drivers who have done all those areas without and never had an issue myself included back in the day.... Even though I'm driving a locked V8 with all the good bits I'd not join this trip as my mates potentially couldn't.

No worries Danny it’s as much for people’s own safety and for reduced mechanical strain, especially those I haven’t wheeled with - pop your own trip up and you and your mates can go under whatever conditions you as TL want = too easy! We all know someone who has done it in 2wd too......
More trips the merrier I reckon👌

Hi Alex,
How many kms would this be roughly? Yet to have long range tanks (maybe someday) and she's real thirsty for 98.

So have to see if it's even possible for me to come from a fuel perspective before I look further into it.

Thanks

Point to point Thurstain between last fill at Jambo I can't imagine it being more than 250-300 klms albeit a fair chunk will be on slow tracks and its the time the engine is runing that will suck the fuel. The 80 has 255 litres - I know the feeling....
I thought GU's had 90+30 litres standard ? There wont be a lot of right pedal action like Robe, this will be crawl in slow rocky terrain.
Cheers.

That's correct, 120L standard but offroading (whether is slow rocky or robe type stuff) it won't give me much more than 350km.. Which is terrible 😂

Plus then it depends how far the servo is between the first track and the last track.. Just have to get used to it and plan ahead, only had this engine a few months. I'm looking at getting long range tanks but not keen on extra weight (maybe get arb Frontier plastic one) but also don't like the loss of clearance that comes with bigger tanks. So on the fence and weighing my options for now.

However your trip looks like it might be doable especially since apparently Jamieson has 98 octane.

I'll keep my interest listed on the trip and will see other commitments.

So now the dates are confirmed?

Dates are pretty much locked in barring bad weather at the last moment at this stage.
I'll put in for leave in a couple of weeks time my works pretty good like that.
Long range tanks are the way to go for more than a weekend away I reckon- espcially when theres limited fueling options. Proper design loses no ground clearance - cant even see mine from side on and they dont interrupt ramp or departure anlges. Weights down low when full and when they are empty its not you even notcie its there. Hilux has a paltry 55-ish litre tanks so I'll be taking 3 x 10 litre back up tanks. Woods Point has fuel from the pub if you ask nicely, maybe ring them and check, can always take octane booster lol.

I was there in November, I started it but it was late in the arvo, I could only do 100m at time as you'd need a spotter almost the whole way, unless you've got alot of clearance or do ALOT of road building, I'd say forget about it, as it its ripped up, I ended up reversing back cos it would've been a long night getting 5 vehicles through.

Well Kool Bananas we have a full crew of people at the moment.
Ready to do this from 'its easy you dont need lockers' to 'forget about it'.
I remember being told at Kulgera 'nah, you can't cross the Finke River, the Army's coming in next week to build a bridge over it so the competitiors can get to the Finke Deset race start line".
So naturally, towing a camper trailer on our own we drove the 150-ish kilometres to have a look. Heck, if we couldn't cross, its only 150-ish k's back to the highway...... Got to the crossing, assesed it, and drove it camper and all on our own. On the video we took you can hear the accelerator pedal 'clang' to the floor 1/2 way across but we made it.

Same will be for every track we take. Asses it on its merits at the time. Heck, I've avoided Brewery track for years in Woods Point, for crazy dudes that one, and then drove up it 2 weeks ago almost in 2WD...

Safety first, and while things can go wrong, we'll make our calls on the day thats what adventure is all about !

if all the logs weren't thrown in the massive ruts it might have been a bit easier too, i would say Barkley river Jeep track is an all day track. but we will return soon Nino.

Not sure where we'll end up Saturday night but home from there if you need it to be would be possible. There's nowhere we'll be that's more than 4 hours from home by then anyway :-) I'll be hiluxedout by then for sure.

I've done a few of these tracks before but haven't been out that way for quite some time now, so would be good.

Please let me know if there is room for one more :)

So far it is only state borders that are closed, a bugger because we were heading off in May to do 3-4 weeks touring around the SA outback, Flinders, Gammon Rangers and some nice remote travel with the new van, that trip will not be happening this year the way things are going

I have a few family who are vulnerable to this virus and it would definitely be a couple of funerals if transmitted through the family group, as is the case in most if not all families.
So yes this is very serious shit, if anyone on this trip has been in any contact what so ever who has had symptoms or diagnosed with the virus please let me know as I will withdraw from the trip because it is just not worth the risk
23 Mar 2020
Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Yes Matt, it is now 'really serious shit' and only going to get worse. Some of you know what I do, and govt here has basically shut down in regards to public events/ mixing with the public. Majority of govt workers, MP's included, are now working from home as the general consensus is 'it is not worth taking the risk'. As some of you may know, many caravan parks are 'shutting up shop' at probably their busiest time of the year. Advice from the 'Feds' & some state govts is also to cancel camping trips, even if to remote areas.

Hard call for Alex to make as to whether proceed or postpone, just glad now I wasnt invited to join the trip as I probably would have withdrawn just to be on the 'safe side'.
24 Mar 2020
Matthew (discomatt)
My work has virtually stopped except for a few hours each morning disinfecting AV equipment at Monash so the lecturers can still use it and live steam so I have had lots of time to read and keep up with whats going on here and overseas.
With all the I have decided to withdraw from this trip for several reasons, first my and my families well being, second but possibly more important a moral and social responsibility to other Aussies to try and stop or at least slow the spread of the virus.
Given the fact that so many have not been tested due to no test kits being available and the fact that so many that have it show no or very few simtoms it is the only responsible choice IMO.
Having said that I really wanted to do this trip and am very disappointed that I have to pull out and it is not a decision I have made lightly. I hope if the trip does go ahead everyone has a great weekend with no regrets but I really hope that Alex has a good long and hard think and comes to the choice that it must be postponed in which case I will see you all there.
Al, you were not invited because we all know how much you love your Paj and don't want to damage it, this trip has very really possibility of damage...
Catch up soon.

Yes Matt,'on call' at the moment. Cheryl goes into hospital tomorrow for 7 days, so I wont drive her crazy.

Your closure link should be advised on TV/radio as majority dont check.websites. Interesting what 'Big Kev' said re; Mansfield so am sure some who dont know, will get a surprise if they are still planning to go away in that area.

Hopefully we all stay safe and do the right thing, as advised by the Federal & State Govts, and hopefully we can all catch up after seasonal closures, as this is going to go on on for at least the next 3-6 months.
25 Mar 2020
Matthew (discomatt)
I hope Cheryl's hospital visit goes well, wish her all the best from us.
The 20,000 fine is for people not sticking with isolation orders, not travel as such.
I heard on the radio this morning it is a on the spot 1000 fine for those who go against travel and congregation orders.
As for as I am concerned anyone who goes against the travel bans and restrictions is a selfish prick who needs to take a good long look in the mirror...
In the forum section Kelvin has made a post stating all trips are off and 4wdtrip will not support any trips until further notice

As long as the liquor shops are open or you can go and buy a t-shirt... but you cant go fishing by yourself or with your kids than yeah you are selfish prick
26 Mar 2020
Matthew (discomatt)
Why would anyone in their right mind decide to go clothes shopping at the moment?
I would class them as a selfish prick as well.
These are unprecedented times that call for unprecedented actions.
Its not about going out and spending time by yourself in the bush, what about the extra fuel and supplies you need, extra shopping and extra risk to you and plenty of others, have you not seen the way this thing spreads and how small changes in behavior can make a big difference to the end result.
When traveling outside your required travel you have a real increase of spread to many people who may have never come in contact with it.
What if you or anyone in a group becomes ill while away? how do you get them out? even more strain on a system that will be stretched to its limits

When traveling outside your required travel you have a real increase of spread to many people who may have never come in contact with it.
What if you or anyone in a group becomes ill while away? how do you get them out? even more strain on a system that will be stretched to its limits
you have less chance of spreading it while in the bush than lets say @ liquor shop.. don't you think? i agree with not arranging gatherings and meetings. We even told the neighbour kid not to come and play with our kids in a very nice a polite way... but how catching fish on your own can spread it? The only way I can interpret it that it make it easier to police everyone when then there is less people out there... but what about the mental health cost to victoria when we go to a lockdown (thanks to dickheads like these https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/wealthy-couple-return-from-skiing-with-coronavirus-then-do-not-self-isolate-20200325-p54du5.html

btw 2 hours to meeting and you are right no trip postpone or cancellation...

Ah well if people decide to do what they want that is their choice, I hope they don't get turned around by authorities as its quite clear that all state parks and national parks are closed to all campers as from mid night last night.
only a $1000 fine if they meet a over enthusiastic ranger or parks officer.
We all have to live with our choices and be happy with them

Thanks for the well organised trip Al. Will do it again. Pauly had a good supply of white Tim-Tam we couldn't eat it all.
