Wittlesea to Yarra Glen (Easy/Medium) EASY

Wittlesea-YarraGlen, VIC

See more trips

This trip is aimed at those that have little experience of 4wd or want to try out a group trip for the first time.   I ask that you 'experienced guys' let those that posted to the forum a month ago for Easy Medium trips, join this one.  If we have spaces come Friday then it will be open for all.

We will meet up at McDonalds in Whittlesea for an 08:30 start, please be there by 08:15.  Message me if you will be late (but try not to be!)

The route will take us up to Frank Thomspon Reserve (Toilet) and then down into Yarra Glen (Toilet).  Estimated distance is 60km which wont be to hard, and therefore depending on our progress and your appetitie, I wll have an extra few extra tracks to add to this route up towards Toolangi.

Please ensure you have a (working) 2 way radio;    I am not expecting to need recovery gear, but airing down will improve your comfort and grip, so bring your compressor.

You will also need your lunch and water.  We will stop to make a fresh brew and eat lunch at a suitable point.

Post questions if you have any.

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of recovery gear as yet. An air compressor being one. Would that be an inconvenience to all others attending?

Colin (EastEndBoy) is the trip organiser but somebody else will have a compressor to help if you need to air down.

Phil (PT75) We will have sufficient compressors. The tracks are not much more that gravel roads most of the ways so you could do it without air down,

Shorty,
Ridge Rd - Deep Creek Rd - Brennans Road East - Eagles Nest Rd - O'Deas Rd - Beale Ave - Kingslake Rd - Baldspur Rd - Jacksons Rd - Mittons Bridge Rd - Buttermans Trk - Mount Wise Road - Symonds Street. into Yarra Glen. This can be done in either direction of course.
Extras from Yarra Glen … Melba Highway - Old Toolangi Rd - Dixons Creek Road - Spraggs - Nolans Rd - Blowhard Rd - Sylvia Crk Rd - Myers Creek … ending up at the Toolangi Discovery Centre.

Hi Colin, Thanks for organising!

I know there's always a few dependencies but do you have a rough idea of when we'll hit Toolangi Disco Centre? Just trying to gauge return time...also with routes mentioned, assuming there's an option to exit towards late arvo if we're not there yet & it's getting on a bit in the evening?

Just trying to understand timing as I don't want to be 'that guy' who withdraws last minute as he didn't ask the question & plan in advance & stops someone else from attending.

I'm always too late to register so thought I'd join first & ask questions now this time.

Thanks!

Hi Shane, As I am away this week, I have not yet put this in my App which will give me the timing. A task for Friday night when back home.
However, if you need to leave early, then you can leave anytime, this is not the Hotel California :)
The trip to Yara Glen is 60km and we can do this in 3-4 hours depending on the time we stop. The ground should be easy to cover in that time, hence my putting the optional second leg out there. We will take a poll at YG if we go up to Toolangi or consider an alternative.
Hope that helps

Hello All, Please "check in" to the trip so we know you are coming, or drop out if you cannot make it. For those of you on the standby list please come back to see if any one has dropped out and then "join the trip" to secure a spot.

WITHDRAWN from Trip - Reason: It seems as though any trip I join – the powers are against me. The little fella has been unwell for last 2 days and I’m on dad duty due to wife working tomorrow so unfortunately for me – I’m out. Good for someone else though. Enjoy, have fun and be safe all and really look forward to joining a trip soon!!

All, I have just uploaded the GPX files for the Whittlesea to Yarra Glen and the Yarra Glen to Toolangi routes. The second is the overflow if we have time and anyone wants more. We can discuss when we get to YG who is up for it.

Trip Leader Colin (EastEndBoy)
FYI … The YG to Toolangi route is 43km and will go past the Toolangi Tavern if we need subsistence late in the day.

Just putting the trip notes up...
Glad you guys enjoyed it and that the "very easy morning" was not too boring and the complete opposite afternoon was not too scary to say you will not go out again.

Nah mate it was a great afternoon, and everyone chipped in for some great teamwork to get everyone home safely.

I’m looking for to Colin’s ‘difficult’ trip. What was it again? Dropped in via helicopter whilst in your car!?!?! 😬😂
