Bad fuel consumption

Hi guys. I have a 100 series landcruiser 4.2 diesel with aftermarket turbo. I've recently spent a large amount of $$ (5k) on engine work. Had the injectors done, valves and clearances, turbo rebuild, major service and Dyno tune done. I am still using 16.4L - 100km of diesel.

i think this is really poor fuel consumption after getting all this work done. Does anybody have any ideas as to getting better fuel consumption or anyone know of a fuel specialist in melbourne where I can take it to get looked at.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Wow your consumption is huge especially for the cash you have outlaid, can I suggest that you email Wayne (Dealer Manager) at Roo Systems he may be able to direct you to one of their stores for assistance.

wdawson@roosystems.com.au

Hope this helps.

HZ?

Don't forget the more power its tuned for the more fuel it is potentially using

Thanks guys

it is the 1HZ engine. Not sure if it was tuned up for power or not. I did notice the difference with it but put that down to the turbo being rebuilt. My mechanic told me it would settle in after 1000km but I've done over 4000km since the work and no difference. I've been using the same fuel from the same servo even the same pump to get accurate figures and always the same.

maybe I need to get it back on a Dyno and have it checked again.

Hi Graeme,

what consumption are you expecting?

what tyres have you got - size & MUDs or AT's etc....

have you got front & rear bars?

do you have a roof rack on?

do you have drawers & is the car driven loaded all the time?

I had a '97 built 80 series with a really sweet 1HZ in it that I'd turbo'd, put a 3" mandrel bent system on and after a fuel pump rebuild at 300k's I also had a boost compensator on it. With front and rear bars, 285/75 BFG muddies and a rear drawer drawer system the best I was getting when driving carefully was low 14's, put the roof rack on and load it up and I was where you are.

Hi Mark

i pretty much got all the gear on my truck that you listed. It's only loaded up when I'm away so during the week empty. I used to get 1100-1200km out of the two tanks but now I'm lucky to get 700km. I'm not expecting it to get the figures of today's new cars but thought I would get a few liters better after spending so much money on engine work. My figures basically didn't change from before the work to after.

Hi Graeme,

your before figs are impressive, best I ever got was bang on 900ks and I almost ran out going into the servo - all before the rear bar & drawers.

Mine was a daily driver for the 7 yrs I had it and I dis 30,000ks pa including a lot of bush driving. It was never loaded other than for trips but once I put the drawers & bar on it added another 250kgs to the car and I really noticed the difference in consumption after that.

800ks was the range I used to expect to get if not loaded after that so I recon it sounds like you may be in a similar boat.

the only things I recon you do is consider the type of snorkel you have (TJM are fairly poor, cut a few open and you'll see they are rather constrictive where as either a safari unit or better still mild steel are great.

Make sure you change the air filter regularly - I did mine every 10,000 or after any dust trip, have you got a good exhaust - the mandrel ones that're off the shelf tend to be restrictive where they bolt onto the turbo at the waste hate (right where the gasses are hottest and where they need to expand the most .... go figure), any good exhaust joint that does hot rods would be tooled up to help you here.

What tyre pressures are you at.

Etc.....

I came to the realisation that as I was driving a car at approx 3T that had a motor in it that was as technologically advanced as the ark (major attraction for simplicity reasons) I'd just have to live with the consumption figures.

all of that said I am still curious about you originally getting 1100-1200 k's a fill - was it skinny tyres & no accessories?

Hi Mark

all the gear was put on my truck straight after I bought it. I basically took it from toyota to my mechanic and had everything fitted at once.(except the draws)

all the gear is arb and snorkel is safari. Truck is serviced every 5000 and major every 20000. It's got about 250000 on it now. Fuel has always been good on it except I noticed a big drop in the last 12 months which is why we did all the work to it.

i know it's a big heavy truck and will eat up the diesel but being it hasn't always been this way I figured there must be a problem.

maybe I'll just have to live with it being it's getting on in age and km's.

the joys of owning a big truck to play in. Ha ha

Whilst I have a petrol V8 cruiser my daily drive is a force fed HSV and tuning is everything..... High performance mods require hipo tuning..... Probably stating the obvious but have you got a good aftermarket ECU on the 100.....Steve Cochrane of Roo Systems (Qld) will help I'm sure and would direct you to the right tuner here Melb.....
