We only syayed there for 4 days so no expert!! Wilpena pound is the main camp, we stayed at Rawnsly though and camped down the back away from the crowds and thought it was better than if staying at Wilpena. Not a lot of 4wding as such unless you do private property, we didn't bother because we had just been to Bendelby Station which was nothing short of awsome and were then heading to Arkaroola and the Gammon Rangers so got a mojor 4wd fix there. Also well worth the visit, Grindells Hut is a great camp.

We found hiking around Flinders to be the best way to take in the sights, drive to a location, pull on the boots and enjoy, make sure your reasionably fit though, some days we were doing 20+km.

September flowers are brilliant and the natural bush and land scape will leave most breathless, its a buitifull and amasing place.

There are a few on 4x4 Earth that have heaps of experiance around the Flinders so my advice is get on there and do some searching or ask on your own thread.

We went up mid last year, bendelby ranges was the highlight of our trip, best camping we found in the region, ample tracks with all of them having lovelly views and if your looking for a challenge billy goat track is great fun. We stayed at few of the stations throughout the flinders ranges but if going back i think this would be the only one we would re-visit. Williow springs skytrek is worth a drive aswell, but i wouldn camp there if your after the real bush feeling.

Hi the Flinders Ranger are a great place to wounder around, just some of the placers and people that are worth a look in Talc Alf 2km up the Strzelecki Track from Lyndhurst, Farina a great camping area with water and showers, Wilpina is a good camping spot but there is always lots of people there. when your on the road keep a look at  http://www.dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads to see if the roads are open.  My trip this year was up Tea tree from Yunta to the Strzelecki Track the gost town of Waukaringa is worth a stop over. It's a great area but you will have fun with most of the time it's dry and easy 4x4ing.

Hi Russell -  we did the trip from Melbourne 2 years ago in April - Day 1 to adelaide / D2-7 Wilpeena Pound camping / relaxing / eating and drinking( plane flights / sunset drives / aboriginal sites and a pool at the resort - good coffee a restaurant and well stocked store - really great place....

D8&9 to Arkaroola - pretty run down actually but functional and some amazing gorges / night drives and star gazing (  have good mattresses as the camp sites aren't brilliant - camp near a working shower facility.

D10 to Parachilna - book ahead if you want a room in the pub or a shipping container accom as camp site is In the old school yard and all gravel!!! Great pub and brilliant entertainment when we were there....

 Wonderful and easy family trip

Thank you all for the fantastic information, just what I Was hoping from this forum and members.

We are looking at 1 to 2 weeks at Flinders and local area to get the most out of what we can.

Trip is to start 18th April and assume the weather won't be to hot then?

At this stage it is just me and the wife, mates say they are going but no commitments yet.

The patrol will be set up by then and capable for most tracks and touring.

We have done a fair few trips and avid campers so roughing it is no problems.

Thanks again and will keep an eye out for more information.

gday Russell, we spent 14days in Flinders Rangers Oct 2016, awesome place drivinging up west side of Flinders Rangers cut through the middle and drive south on east side.
Wilpena Pound where you can stay at a caravan park, fuel and food to Bachina Gorge has large bush camp sites, river bed crossings, amazing views. we experienced heavy rains towing a camper thorugh which was amazing to say the least.

Parachilna has one of the best pub meals in Aust (Prairie Hotel) with the Feral Mixed Grill (Emu, Camel & Roo) served with salt bush leaf, great venue, ;arge space out back for kids or large group and have their own beer on tap.
The drive from Parachilna to Blinman gorges are sensational with great spots along the way to search forr wildlife and the famous yellow footed rock wallaby which is heavily endagered. there are private 4wd parks, stations and treks to explore. if you enjoy hiking Wilpena Pound is amazing, trails range from easy to hard. (hard being 21+kms hike over the ridge of Wilpena approx 9.5hr walk..

Amazing part of the world! hope you can visit during some rains, the gorges treks are just brilliant !

bush camps are large sites with good distances between the sites the drop toilets are clean, Parks VIC can learn from SA PARKS

have a great drive via Mildura or Renmark camp over night, and if you can maybe look at overnighting at Cadell... Cadell is very senic free camp site with amazing cliffs on the Murray. Cadell operates a 24hr barge to cross the Murray. very exciting for the kids (and big kids)

good luck and book ahead at Wilpena Pound resort

cheers
Rod
