Cape York May 2019 MEDIUM / HARD

Cape York, QLD

See more trips

Looking at a 2 week trip into Cape York.

Am very happy to fit in with others, can build a trip with others, or plan the whole thing, as have a bit of 4wd club experience. My wife is working, and am looking for some other people to travel with.

I’d hoped to tick off some of the iconic locations as well as some of the less commonly travelled ones. Had been thinking of looking at the east coast on the way up, but weather or better ideas can prevail. Would be nice to do some beach/creek fishing and camping. It’s also nice to get to campsites with facilities fairly regularly to be able to get gear and ourselves properly clean. There are a few recommended (tried and tested trips online) that look good or we can make our own.

Any itinary would be agreed upon before leaving, and I’d like the trip to remain around a Medium rating. Changes could happen with universal consent along the way to suit the group. (weather, mechanical, going with mood of group etc).

Not looking to travel with very loud/hard drinking people, (but do like a beer and a laugh). Perhaps travelling with people in 30’s to 50’s (with or without children), and people wanting to enjoy the environment as much as the driving.  I do also have a spare seat in my 4wd.

Safety would be a priority, and although people are responsible for themselves, travelling together is wise, and we’d make sure that nobody would be left stranded if things went wrong. Just make sure that your insurer covers you in Cape York if we can’t get you out. I am NOT experienced mechanically.

I wouldn’t be taking my Camper, just a swag.

I’d not be looking at going anywhere which would require extra fuel to be carried.

If needed, we could adjust the dates a little too.

If people send me the money, I can do group bookings for permits ferry etc if preferred.

Requirement

  • Electric Winch
  • Recovery Gear

Richard, if i may offer some advice, at this stage the Bamaga Road is closed, Battlecamp Road is also closed, as is Lakefield NP and the same for Portland Roads/ Chilli Beach. The recent weather event up here has made a large impact on the Cape. I understand your trip is still a month away, but Lakefield will not open till possibly late June at this stage. It may pay to contact Morton Station to get an update closer to leaving.

Thank you Tony. Yes, there’s been some pretty good weather in the Cape this year, and it’s going to make it lovely and green. I think that it’s going to look great, and hope that there’s enough good stuff accessible by the time we leave. When we went in 2015 it was pretty dusty.

From the trip description offered, I don't think you would need to pre book any ferry trips or attain permits. Two weeks seems a bit light on as there is much to see and do unless you have just one or two targets.
My experience with the east coast from Cooktown to Cape Melville is the Wakooka Road is slow, being very narrow, winding between trees for 180km just to the Wakooka ruins and about another 50km to the Cape. If you are set on going to Melville, don't waste your time via that route.
If I was doing it again I would tackle the CREB, then the Frenchmans Track, then the OTT from Palm Creek (entrance is looking more like Gun Shot, but there are alternatives), to Nolans Brook. I'd be giving the Jardine ferry and the iconic Tip sign a miss unless you need it for a bucket list item. Afterward you could collect the Coach Road to the Maytown ruins on the way home. I know it's a lot, but you just might squeeze it in with a huge sense of achievement.
Oh, and TWELVE. No way unless you have special skills herding cats. Even SIX would be a handful. Minimum three and max five as some campsites would struggle to cope if there were competition from other groups.
Cheerz and Good luck.
