Midweek Central Gippsland Tour to Moroka Hut MEDIUM

Central Gippsland / Avon Wilderness Park, VIC

See more trips

Will be doing a day trip with the kids to Moroka Hut, starting at Lake Glenmaggie (just north of Hayfield) and then doing a loop to Moroka Hut and back down to Briagolong via Valencia Creek Track.

The loop is approximately 6 hours of driving, and has about 8-10 river crossings, so a snorkel is recommended. This isn't an extremely difficult track but a decent 4x4 setup is required. Ideally 32" All-Terrains and 2" lift, or above. No winch needed but your own recovery gear will be required.

Will be meeting at Glenmaggie Weir Reserve (Picnic Area on Lake Glenmaggie) at 10am. From there it's a 30 minute drive to Huggett's Crossing, probably the biggest river crossing of the trip across Avon River, if you get through this one you will be fine for the rest of them. From here it's a 2 hour drive through the hills to Moroka Hut. Will be aiming to arrive at the hut around 1pm and stop for lunch. The drive back south to Briagolong will take approximately 3 hours, as we will be going down via Valencia Creek Tk to avoid the seasonal closure on Marathon Road. The Valencia Creek Tk has about 8 river crossings and will eventually exit onto Marathon road. Could stop for a pub meal in Briagolong for dinner before heading home to Melbourne.

Weather forcast for Tuesday looks good so far.

I have 2016 Pajaro: snorkel, UHF, Good tires. But no lift package. Is it good enough for this trip?

Are the tires All-Terrains or just normal road tires?

I haven't been on these tracks before but all my maps classify them as "Rough 4WD", meaning there could be a lot of steep steps, deep ruts, eroded track etc. so it's hard for me to know whether you'll be ok. Another thing that can impact the difficulty is rain, if it gets slippery, you'll have a very hard time on these tracks.

I'd say if you have AT's with no lift you might still be ok, but could sustain some damage to your car, so it's up to you.

If you're on standard road tires I would probably sit this one out.

Thanks Garry, appreciate the info, always great to get a recent track report.

Ofer, judging by Garry's info of the track, it might be best not to attempt this one in a standard vehicle.

Yes I would certainly recommend some AT or MTs on these tracks at this time of year. Valencia Cr track isn't so bad but once you get down into new place and grand final spur it can get a bit slippery. Should be ok with no lift as long as a fairly experienced driver and have good recovery gear.

Thanks all.
The tires are for the road and Off road.
I do like to do River Crossing....
Since I don’t have winch in the car, only rescue gear and I don’t know what other car has to help if something happened probably should look for a different trip therefore.

Hey all
Happy to see the trip filled up.
Looks like it’s going to be super cold Tuesday morning.
Doesn’t look like there will be too much rain before the trip.
Looking forward to seeing you all.

Yeah hopefully the rain holds off. Don't forget to bring a packed lunch.... and a spare set of clothes and boots just in case we have any issues through the rivers.
