Hi all,
running a wife / partner friendly high country June long weekend trip meeting at Sheepyard flat on Friday night around 8PM. ~ 3.5 hrs drive with a tea stop. Last fuel in Mansfield so make sure you have enough. Bring some fire wood if you arrive early as there is limited wood in the area.
Saturday morning we will head off along Brocks Rd onto eight mile gap Rd onto Bluff link Rd past Bluff hut and then onto King Billy track / Howitt Rd. Depending on numbers / interest and weather we could do the walking track up to Gantner / Macalister spring hut. The maps state ~ 1hr 15 mins each way (5.4 kms) so we would need to leave Sheepyard by 8:30 am at the latest. My estimate is ~ 2.5 hrs Sheepyrad flat to top of Zeka sput track, 3 hr hike and 2.5 hrs from top of Zeka to Wonagatta. If we don't do the hike then we will just proceed down Zeka spur to Wonagatta and set up camp early. More time to collect fire wood for what could be a cold night. (Bring a chain saw if you have one and of course warm clothes)
Sunday onto Hernes spur track, a great climb up through the fog most likely with a beautiful view when you get to the top. A good photo opportunity. Turn right onto Cynthia range track, station track to Howittville then onto Talbotville for the night. Depending on time we may detour and complete Billy goat track but we would have to complete the track in both directions I beleive, estimate ~ 3 hrs return trip. Monday after a late start head home to Melbourne ~ 4.5 hours drive.
This trip may get cancelled if the weather is not suitable for high country camping, mind you my last trip in Wonagatta it was minus 5.1 deg C in the morning but a great trip and there was no snow! Just cold. Double sleepng bag worked a treat that night. Thanks
