Lerderderg through Wombat to La Franchi Hut EASY / MEDIUM

Wombat State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Planning another trip up Wombat / Lerderderg, Starting up Bacchus March end and finishing up near Daylesford. Will mostly be some easy tracks, especially if tracks are dry and not wet. If wet they should be a bit of fun and some tracks might be medium. I will be trying out my new Patrol, so won't be tackling anything crazy.

I will be following some tracks from previous trips and towards the end hopefully we will find La Franchi Hut, which I never been before but tracks should not be too hard around that area. We will only do this if time permits - don't want to finish trip late and into the dark. Aiming to finish around 4.30PM

We will be doing a shallow creek crossing that I did last time, but water level should not be past hub height, and it might be dry still. Please note that pin stripes and vehicle damage may occur please be prepared as Wombat is unpredictable.

If tracks are wet, there will be mud for sure. If mud is not really your thing, this might not be your kind of trip. I won't be tackling waist deep bog holes - but mud will be thrown around for sure.

Be prepared and read description properly so you won't be disappointed. This trip will be mostly easy if dry - should be fairly ok with good tyres and dry tracks. All goes to plan we will cross the whole wombat / lerderderg east to west through tracks, then we will hit a few kms of bitument to make it up to Daylesford where we will hit a few last tracks to find La Fanchi Hut.

Recommended Setup
  • 32 inch muddies or aggressive A/T (No HT)
  • 2 inch lift
  • WORKING WINCH is a must just in case.
  • Front and Rear recovery points
  • Extensive Recovery Kit in good condition (Snatch strap, extension strap, snatch block, dampener, shackles etc)

Trip will be cancelled if it's raining too much or weather turns to shit.

Ok so I received a few PM's asking about Winches.

I don't think we will need winches if everything goes well and tracks are dry. I like to always recommend a winch because if things go pear shape a winch can save your vehicle (mine did twice when I nearly slid off track reversing back down a slippery hill.. and when I broke a tailshaft going up a tough hill climb)

I don't think we will need a winch as such for a normal drive as most tracks should be easy going.

Of course, everyone comes at their own risk and if you think you have a well setup vehicle but no winch - you can make your own decision to come or not (As long as you have recovery points at least and a good extensive recovery gear). Of course I put up what I recommend and for me I feel that a winch is a must for the safety of your vehicle, but not necessarily required for a normal drive as most tracks should be easy. I drove all these tracks previously (except the last bit to the hut) with my Navara and had no issues.. some track drove them even in the wet without much drama.. having said that my Navara is front locked.. My new Patrol isn't so we will see how we go.

I was at BMW a few weeks ago and asked why their cars don’t have a Low range TC so we can take the cars truly off-road . They couldn’t give me an answer.
Hey Steven, sorry to disappoint but I posted last night that I will be bringing cruiser on this trip.

Yep that’s the one. A little on the loud side as it’s running a straight through exhaust stack. Sort of got bored with it, hence building the Cayenne.

See you all tomorrow morning.

Patrol been giving me a couple issues but after a big repair bill hopefully it's all fixed now and took it for a test drive today and been good. I was supposed to seal snorkel today but ran out of time, so won't be tackling and dodgy looking bogs. Also there might be some tracks temporarily closed as they had planned burn off's a while back. So we'll see how it goes.

Tomorrow should be an easy stroll with a nice sunny day planned, tracks should be dry and easy.

See you all at KFC bacchus marsh tomorrow morning.
