Snow trip 2, Big River Matlock (maybe Terrible) MEDIUM

Snow trip 2, Big river, Matlock / Terrible, VIC

See more trips

Plan is to meet in Warby, opposite Shell servo. We'll leave at 8.00 am to head to big river. Air down at Stockmans and head towards Mt Matlock via Cornhill. Hopefully this is where we'll get snow. Hopefully we get there in good time and we will decide whether or not to go across the ridge to Mt Terrible, basically all above 1000 m which could mean all snow driving. After terrible head back. Pretty much all tracks would be considered easy for most vehicles if there wasn't any snow. Rated it medium instead as there should be decent snow, well, fingers crossed. Bring lunch, warm drinks and warm clothes. I'm bringing my dogs so if anyone else is planning on doing the same, please, dog friendly dogs only.

Matthew (discomatt)
Hi mate, I am keen for a snow run but it is Josh's bucks party on Saturday so I am not sure how I will pull up Sunday. He is not a big drinker and the days activities does start early with the you fellas no doubt heading out to night clubs at the end of the day at which point I will bail out. I think I am a bit old to be out clubbing...
I will get the car and gear ready and assume I am coming but will confirm Sunday morning or Saturday night if that's OK.
I wont take a spot just in case the trip fills up...
Its up to fate now!!

No worries buddy. I kept a spot free for you anyway, hence why it's only 5 cars on here. Would be great to have you along!! We wouldn't want it to be a boring drive hey!?

Awesome trip, car and camper were near faultless with only minor issues with the camper and a broken UHF areal mount. Over 14000km travelled and some of the most amazing sights in Australia and one of the most brutal roads I have driven up to Mitchel Falls but all worth it. Al is still away but home soon

Looks like I might be in a spot of trouble, that bastard that stopped in the middle of the track to take photos of us in the side waiting for him to pass has sent that photo to some guy high up in the 4x4 industry which was then sent to my boss

Trip Leader Maarten (DUTCHD)
And what did he say the issue was? Us trying to get around some flog parked in the middle of the track forcing to get people travelling up hill to get around him???
A shame I didn't take the dash cam from the ute. We could have gotten him in trouble

This guy was coming down the track we were going up but instead of moving over he stopped in the middle of the track so we moved to the side but I got a bit stuck so he's accused me of tearing up the track. I have a sticker on my windscreen of where I work so my boss has been questioned about it

Matthew (discomatt)
Its your car not the bosses so nothing to do with him but if your boss has an issue I will be happy to make a statement clearing you of wrong doing.
We were not on closed tracks, we were not off the track in an environmentally sensitive area and with all the snow cover who can confirm without question where the actual track is in that section of what is essentially a fire break that gets a 25 ton grader through it every couple of years to remove new vegetation.

On another thought of that guys comments and photo taking.
Over the years I have done clean up the bush days organised by Victoria 4WD association, picked up bags full of rubbish on my own 4wding trips and even pulled up other 4wders for crap behaviour while out in the bush.
So to be accused of destructive behaviour by another 4wder really set me back a bit and made me question whether I ( we ) were doing the wrong thing and being part of the problem that we as a 4wding community face and whether our trip could / would contribute to even more track closures.
After heaps of thought and consideration I can understand where this guy was coming from but having said that I do sincerely believe we did nothing wrong and his good intentions are miss placed and over the top.
As stated we were not on closed tracks, not doing any damage to the environment and have nothing to answer for
10 Jul 2018
Trip Leader Maarten (DUTCHD)
Na, being the greenie that I am, even I couldn't see anything wrong with it. Like you said, it's a fire break that is purposely kept clear, covered in snow and if the guy thinks we were in the wrong.... HE was obstructing ascending traffic, purposely blocking the track in an attempt to take photos. If nothing else, he caused us to go off the 'track' by not giving way. So who's really to blame here? One could actually wonder if it was done on purpose to make people out 4wd-ing look bad. Block the track with your prado going down hill, making others scramble up hill to go around....
