Woods Point day trip Monday Jan 8 EASY / MEDIUM

Yarra State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Planning a nice day run trip up to Woods Point in the 2nd week of Jan, going to make sure we don't pick a day of 35DegC so keeping the date a bit flexible until Jane confirms we're going to get a nice day. So join up as you can but will be weather dependent especially if total fire ban, trip will be pushed in or out to avoid.

Will be pretty cruisey and relaxing, usual route to get there, but out via Jerico and Casper Creek to Jordan Divide Road at the end of the day.

Just need BYO lunch and a full tank of fuel, standard recovery gear, your own working GPS in case the group splits due to mechanical issues as I'll be stopping to help anyone needing assistance, assuming it's not me lol.  Must have A/T tyres at minimum, no road tyres, low range gearing no SUV's.  Suitable for anyone new to 4x4'ing as long as you have a can-do spirit.

Tracks are well formed no wheel-lifting -unless you want it in a couple of spots- no scratchy paint stuff etc.  Just a relaxing days drive with a splash or two through the river here and there.  A few steep spots but low range and steady throttle sees you through.

Putting in a few extra spots in case the date changes and everyone can't make it.  Would consider making an overnighter if that's a more popular option too to get some elbow bending time in of an evening.

You might want to head up to Toolangi with me on Sunday if no one drops out 'Big Kev'.

Alex, weather looks perfect; about 27 on the Monday. Have a great trip.

Guys, just been to the radiator shop this morning hoping a TINY water leak where my top tank is soldered on to the core could be fixed with a blob of solder or similar but no joy, rad has to come out and top tank removed and re-sobered, sigh.
So cars booked in Monday morning to be fixed which means I can’t make it damn.
Can or does anyone want to take over leading the trip or I’ll have to cancel with apologies!,,,,,,!

That's a 'bugger' Alex but better to be 'safe rather than sorry' as you know what happened to me when I had the leaking radiator.

that was when we were coming over Zeka spur track wasn't it Allan?

Yeah AL’s engine was boiling like a billy even on the downhill section from mcfarlanes to Licola! I can’t risk the tiny leak becoming a major split in the boonies. Kev if you can lead and have a map the plan was to air down at stockmans reward. Backtrack slightly to snowy road, go down that, cross the bridge and turn left immediately. Follow that track to Ely track, turn right, follow Ely. Hit Frenchmans spur, follow that, tack shortcut 2 down to frenchmans Creek, turn right, follow that over the river, take boundary to corn hill track, follow that head to mount Matlock. Go over the mountain past the fire 🔥 tower, go down pheasant creek, turn left on to dearlove and come out just out of woods point. Head to comet flat take noble spur, turn right on walhalla road, the in 100 metres turn left on the Jericho track. Follow that NEARLY to the end then take Casper Creek track on the right up to the Jordan divide road. Turn right to the woods point road then turn left towards home. All tracks in good nick, Gaz has done all of them up to woods point as have you so the only section you’d have to map is Jericho to Casper but it’s easy done it many times, let me know if you can carry the torch. Cheers

    Matthew (discomatt)
That's a bugger Alex, as mentioned better to know of the issue and pull out rather than be out bush with a water leak and cooked engine.
I would have joined the trip but already back at work and worked all the way through but have heaps of trips planned for the first half of the year so a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do

Oh well that 2 radiators in 13 years. Grin and bear it I suppose. It’s weeping right on the top tank to core join seam so it’s a pull off and re solder job, a repair would just blow out so on the sidelines I go.
Thanks Kev and Gaz for stepping up see you on the next one guys !

Guys can you do me a favour. I presume you are driving past, or are close to, Knockwood Reserve so you could see if it has been re-opened. I think it was Alex or Gazza who said it had been shut due to the hoons doing donuts through the campground.

Reason I ask is that we plan to head up that way in a few weeks for 3-4 days and will stay at either Skipworth or Knockwood.

    Thanks in advance.

Yep go the middle ! You’ve also got the option of going up the bit we always zig zag around too. I’d do the lower and upper skip the middle section it’s got a bit of a rock ledge. Easy down, not so easy up
