Ok so this is a step up day trip for those wanting to advance their driving skills. The first track is Rocky Track which has a few lines - the easy lines can be done in a stock vehicle.

I'm putting my wife at the wheel for this one, so nothing extreme. You will have experienced drivers leading and trailing the convoy so we will get you through daunting stuff.

was there sunday. definitely changed since i was last there. min 2in lift 33s with steady crawling will get you up

Thurstain - yep, we are going to do exactly what I intend. Get newish drivers to step up to more experienced wheelers.

JB - great to see your experience in here. Many of us follow your tv show, so it's good to know from your experience what the tracks are like at the moment.

For the life of me, cannot understand the way you rate your trips Winston. Stock vehicle on Rocky; ok if you want to smash your undercarriage.

As JB said, Rocky changes on a regular basis and no way would I be taking a vehicle up there without some sort of lift and 32' tyres as absolute minimum.

Maarten (DUTCHD)
seems an issue that's common.... Kelvins "snow run" that was classed easy/medium (or maybe just medium) with stockish utes attending ended up on strickland spur track banging and crashing over pretty decent rocks..... guess peoples opinion of "medium" or "hard" vary. But nonetheless, Rocky requires a modified car.... if we're "stepping up" and doing Lyndalls (or whatever its called these days) lift and 32's should be minimum. I've got sliders now, and front locker fitted. The patrol should outperform my abilities now....

Hi JB , love your show , it was your tv show that inspired me to get back on the tracks after a 10 year sabbatical , I so regret selling my GU many many years ago. I drive a Pajero now , grrrr it drives very different .
cheers. glad you like the show. S4 starts next week on foxtel Ch Aurora monday 8pm and Thursday on C31
in saying above there is a side track to the right we had a stock Navara get up no issues with some guidance. wouldn't go up the middle in stock.

The bypass sections of Rocky are doable in a stock vehicle. The 'hard' line is there for those who are up to it.

I personally don't think it's a difficult track, even taking on said hard line.

Matthew (discomatt)
Winston don't be offended or take this the wrong way but that is a big statement from someone who has driven it once maybe twice in a twin locked 4by on big tyres that has done no end of damage to there 4by. I have done rocky numerous times in a standard car and it was never easy and a few times almost scary. Yes I have never done real damage to my car on it and now after years of experience in a reasonably well set up 4wd I call it a easy track for me but it should not be classed as easy track that standard cars can drive on a public forum that inexperienced drivers could read and take as gospel. There are multiple spots on all options that can do serious damage to the inexperienced even in modded trucks. I have seen broken axels, CV's, drive shafts and torn brake lines all on Rocky track.

George (Georgie_Kyro)
I remember a time i recovered a rolled over prado on the chicken track at rockey track.

These guys had a fairly stock prado and obviously were looking at honing in on bettering their skills.

They lost traction whilst climbing, vehicle had slightly moved off course with rear end not exactly facing straight.
When he attempted to take off again car rolled back a little and it was enough for him to have the rear tyre ride the high side of the bank.

I have added 2 photos which also shows this section of track was not even classed as medium or hard and i would call this section fairly easy ,
Which to me indicates that if your vehicle is not well equipped or you're not that experienced it can happen any where any time...
It happens to the best of us.

Its a tough track because if something goes wrong you're in the poo very quickly with pretty much instant panel damage.

A track is only as hard as 'what happens when something goes wrong'.

I can drive Rocky up the guts, as we did recently no issues so does that make it easy ? NO. Because if something went wrong it becomes a very hard track very quickly.

Hey Winston,
I'll have an empty vehicle (maybe 1 or 2, still confirming if they are coming) you can jump in with me, I'm still a bit green but having you in the Paj will give me some confidence ;) . PM me if you want and we can sort the details.

Have done Rocky Track more times than I can remember. To do it in a stock 4bie.....suicide to said stockie. 2" lift & really good AT's minimum.

Just my 2 cents. Have a great trip all. I'm jealous.

Still going ahead. I haven't really planned a route for this one as I don't know Toolangi that well.
Will not be taking any risks at all. If we come to a track and it's sketchy then we turn around and find another track that is more suitable.

Hey guys just letting you know I'm going to be running without a front locker tomorrow as since the repairs they've realised the drive shafts that were installed and recommended are actually too long and cause the CVs to bind on full extension. So rest assured it won't be a hard trip. And if in doubt, winch it out.

I've planned a bit of a route but as this is my first trip through Toolangi please be patient with me as some tracks may be a bit too easy and we may come across others that we decide are too hard.

Just out for some fun. Weather will be perfect so I hope we all have a good day.

Have offered probably all except Rocky but she said she's happy to ride shotgun just for a fun day out together. I'll see if I can convince her to take the wheel for a bit.

Have fun guys, would love to be joining you but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. Its been nice and sunny for a while so the tracks should be dry and all the nasty bog holes have chicken tracks but check all holes for depth before driving through, some are car swallowing, the puddles along the top of Rocky track will be shallow so no need to check them.

thanks Winston for organising, and great to meet all the others. It was an entertaining day, nothing too crazy but quite a few good sections to drive, and a bit more in Rocky and coming down Lyndalls (first time coming down it). The locker made a noticeable difference on Rocky and glad the new sliders were on coming down Lyndalls. Looking forward to a next trip!
