Black River / Woods Point weekender MEDIUM

Woods Point and surrounding forest., VIC

See more trips

Planning a 2 night trip in October, will involve some night driving on the Friday night after work to get to Woods Point for an evening camp at either Comet or Scotties - so have Friday munchies before departing Warburton or as we drive, there will be no formal dinner stop on the way once we leave.   Pizza and the like is available at Warburton or Fish and Chips (recommended) at the Log Cabin in Launching Place etc if eating beforehand.  Bitumen and gravel roads on Friday night only, set up camp .

Saturday morning after a Leisurely (with a capital 'L') start we'll make our way out of camp via Old Coach and Webber Spur and up Abbot Link Track, then head over to Mt Selma, and down Champion Spur turn right on to Black River then via Lazarini and either German Spur or the main drag, time dependant, back to camp for chow and a few BYO's around the fire .

Sunday, break camp and exit via Frenchmans or Dearlove with a lunch stop somewhwere on our way back to Big River before airing up and home. Will be back at Warburton early afternoon dependant on how we pull up Sunday morning after those BYO's......

You must have enough fuel for 2 full days driving, food and supplies, although Woods Point has a pub plus limited stock at the general store/post office, I prefer self sufficency just in case.

A comfy swag or tent, working GPS, standard recovery gear, good tyres (either A/T's or M/T's) plus low range - no SUV's -  and an inch or two of lift are required. Winch is not a necessity but this is not a beginners trip - 'must' have some time in the seat experience as Saturday is a big day on the tracks with ground to cover including some steep-ish hills so driver experience is required. Its great terrain and lots of views throught the day.

If its wet weather trip will be cancelled I'm not keen on huddling around a wet wood fire nor sliding down to Abbot Link !

Yep you bet Gaz, no point going all the way around to meet somewhere close to home. You can bag us the best spot if you can get there early.... Call you on the radio as we get close, have the fire going too would be great.

GOT THOSE NEW TYRES ????

I used longer lower arms Gaz as I needed to lower my rear pinion to roll the diff forward to get more angle into the uni- it was virtually a straight line from the pinion to the gearbox with the gearbox uni doing 'lots of work', the diff end doing 'nothing'. At least they now have a similar amount of opposing angle..
Mine are the 11mm longer ones works a treat. They weren't much $$ but you could probably more easily sleeve yours and extend if you didn't want to buy. Thing is they are soooo much stronger than standard sealed the deal.

The big ranger will walk it in bud, too easy. I snuck a look down Champion when we went past the top of it the other day and it was all snowed in with no wheel track. Tempting it was.....
01 Sep 2017
Mick (Grey Ranger)
Is there still any lingering snow around? Would love some virgin snow. There was a surprising amount of traffic on the last trip lol.

Looks like we've got a full trip guys, looking forward to it!
Not much hope of snow at 1300 metres in October though😐

Yes of course lol

Well, interesting..... Was up that was this weekend on Allans' Selma Snow trip and without doubt, neither the Black or the Goulburn rivers are passable right now. Took one look and it was nope, no way. Will have to watch the weather we need the rivers to go way down, then hope the entry and exits aren't scoured out. It was a raging torrent you wouldn't even try walking it. We had to backtrack all the way back up Champion.
17 Sep 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Washed mine this morning, man there was some mud under it after yesterdays 4 o clock track... All ready for the next adventure.
The rivers up there rise and fall very quickly and will be well down within a few days assuming there is no more torrential rain. As for the entry and exits that is any ones guess.
Might try and get some new tyres before this trip, the old ones don't have much traction lately

They will be well down by next weekend

I reckon Comet Gazza if you can grab the spot at river level where there's an old footbridge would be great to roll up to a warm fire assuming its not 35DegC, lol.
Please everyone completely fill your fuel tanks before we leave Friday - if there's any back tracking due to high rivers or blocked tracks we'll be covering a lot of ground in low range and we don't want fuel to be an issue because we didn't prepare!
Cheers.

Work is a little light on next week so I may end up heading up early as well to help with the fire wood collection...
Will confirm mid week
06 Oct 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Now I will be able to get there without the car shaking to bits, it has had some horrid vibrations and shudders lately and was horrid over 80km/h. Got the wheels balanced even though the tyres are well worn and due for replacement, 3 out of 4 wheels now have 100g or over hanging off them. Monday its a front end check and wheel alignment just to make sure everything is 100%
07 Oct 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
MMM I think the old girl would need more than tyres to even be half the car the D4 is. After a month of ownership it still impresses me every time I get behind the wheel

Weather forecast is looking reasonable for the weekend - a few clouds but no rain, so I'll start packing tonight, fingers crossed !!! Gazza and Matt just confirm later in the week if you could if we are meeting you at Woods so we're not hanging around in Warburton on Friday, cheers.

As you said Alex, looks like you are going to have great weather. A few showers on Wednesday and Thursday to help keep the dust down, then no rain when camping. Have a great trip and look forward to seeing the pics and trip report.

Sounds like a tough one if your only going to watch lol.
A challenger for the ranger maybe?

Yeah...... 'no'. Unless you want to make an insurance claim....
You lower yourself by winch into the river, then drive up the river to points unknown, but the track does come back on to Champion spur so it's possible, but that drop into the river is undriveable, up or down. We can stop and have a look on Saturday if you like..:-)
10 Oct 2017
Mick (Grey Ranger)
No I still like my car lol.
Maybe something a little less challenging.
I don't mind the odd detour every now and again that loops back onto the main track.
Looking forward to the weekend. Had a blast on Paulys trip 2 weeks ago. All the unplanned tracks and unplanned jelly shots made for an interesting weekend lol

Mate, no problem. If you're making the long haul from Wang, I'd go in via Mansfield then Jamieson and meet us at Woods Point direct Save you 2 legs of a triangle.
Gazza and or Matt will be there early and you'll be able to hear him on the UHF from camp he can guide you (if you don't mind Gazz/Matt) as its staggering distance from the pub and it's signposted from the pub anyway. Worth thinking about anyway, let us know. Cheers.

It had some trucks going up a greasy hill and a snotty little boghole with a steerp-ish exit. Not sure where I saw it now !
10 Oct 2017
Mick (Grey Ranger)
Yeah sounds like my clip.

https://youtu.be/CFTzhC98gHA

The greasy hill was moonlight spur track heading towards Mt Matlock.
The creek crossing was the last section of a unmarked track rated double black on Paulys rooftop map. Luckily we were doing it the easy way, “down” lol.
Was a great track but would not attempt it the other direction.

Bad news Gazza, Brewery Tk is a seasonal closure. I think some of the tracks might be a bit 'slippery' if they had as much rain up there as we had at home last night.

Just head over to Burnt Camp Track, hehehehehehehe all the action you want on the wall of death.... If you're not back at camp by the time we get there Friday night we'll wander over in the morning on Saturday for a look-see.

Can everyone please check in we can't wait for people who don't check in - we'll be leaving 6.30 sharp !

At this stage Matt, Gazz and Kyle I'm expecting we'll meet at Comet Flat.
