Robe 2017 EASY / MEDIUM

Robe/Beachport, SA

See more trips
The annual 4wdtrip journey to Robe is on again!

Many details to work out but we are going to have 2 convoys running in opposite directions each day out of Robe and Beachport. Sand driving is fairly easy stuff - you can do it on road tyres and all terrains just fine, muddies are actually a hindrance but I was fine on them last year. Please bring whatever recovery gear you have, don't stress though if you aren't set up for a Simpson crossing! Please note that rated recovery points are mandatory for this trip! It's almost inevitable that someone will get bogged. Please also note that this is still a trip for 4wds with dual range transmissions. There are some areas that do require low range gearing.

This will cater for everyone from first time sand drivers to the experienced.

We will be staying at one of the region's caravan parks so camper trailers will be ok to bring. Just not on the sand itself. We will be reserving the caravan park once the trip is filled and will require everyone to make payment in advance of the trip to secure the sites. More details to come on this.

It's about a 6.5 hour drive from Melbourne so it will mean an early start on Thursday morning.

Please note you must have a sand flag for the trip.

Yeah mate you do. In the trip description I mentioned I can make them for $25 for anyone that's keen on a cheap one. They are adequate for the trip and save you blowing over $100 for a "sand/mine whip" that you may never use again. You'll just need to mount it, I commend using 2 marine grade steel hose clamps on one of your bullbar posts.

I have been hanging to get back over there, Southern Ocean Tourist park would be the place to stay , they have it all camping, cabins, camp kitchen, laundry , fires allowed, free BBQs, and only 5 minutes to the beach access, in Beachport.
For a sand flag I used a length of conduit with a high viz flag and just slid it over my UHF aerial and hose clamped it .

Last year I did mine with 2 pvc pipes, a connector, a cap, high vis flag and some black spray to make it look legit. Zip tied to my bullbar

Gave me no issues, been on the roof rack since then (because why not lol) and zip ties still on Bullbar ready for this year!

Hi Rob!

It's not far from robe to Beachport. About 45 mins on the highway. You *could* drive it on sand in a day fairly easily but taking away all the great stops for fun in the dunes and photos and beach play. So the plan is to start from each end and exit the sand somewhere around the middle then do the reverse the following day.

Sorry to hear it Les but thanks for opening the spot up.

Guys just a heads up, spoke to Naomi asking about bringing our dog. She has ok'd it, said given the time of year it will be fine.

If you have a fur baby and would like them to tag and wag along then give them a call.

Our boy is a gentle giant. Great Dane. Fantastic with kids and will look forward to meeting you all and making new friends.

No I'll have my old gsd with us camping, car & drive are words etched in his brain. He's people friendly but takes some time being dog friendly thanks to little white fluffy things.

Anything to do with nationally governed parks cannot restrict animals kept inside the vehicle.

Is always a 'grey' area with dogs travelling in vehicles through National Parks, but it does say they are not permitted. Anyway, your call Winston but maybe a phone call to confirm is a good idea.

Spoken to rangers about how it works here in Vic. They've said that as long as they're in the vehicle they aren't on national park land. There's a similar grey area with drone use.

My 4 legged friend isn't the one tearing up camp spots and reserves doing doughnuts (not sure if you seen the latest from Hume DELWP FB page) and throwing asbestos contaminated material in Wombat State Forest (from DELWP Grampians FB page) all in the last week... not to mention the daily illegal dumping of fridges, microwaves, ovens etc that is done by idiots with no respect.

And then dogs are causing damage to our environment with heir "scent"? LOL.

That's my understanding of the Nat Parks rule regarding dogs. As long as they stay in the car they can travel through a park.

Chatting to Roothy a couple months ago and he told me a story about a mate of his that was fined for having a dog in a national park and the rangers weren't there , all they needed was some photos that were posted on social media, we will all be taking plenty of photos and most of them will end up on either social media or our website so just be aware.

Allan, sent a message to Winston re; dogs in National Parks. In Victoria they MAY or MAY NOT, (depends on the Ranger), let you drive through with a dog in the vehicle, but in SA it is NOT PERMITTED in majority of places, including Little Dip & Beachport Conservation Areas. There are a couple of areas in a few of the SA national parks where dogs are permitted if on a leash, but not many.

Have been over there a couple of times and never seen a dog in these parks and was told that the 'locals' have no issue dobbing in those who do take dogs into the parks.

For those interested, possibly the fishing folk but most definitely those who want to do some beach driving, these are the tide times for Friday and Saturday.
Friday , lowtide 7.23am and 6.54pm
hightide 12.56pm.
Saturday lowtide 7.51am and 7.11pm.
hightide 1.13pm.
So we will need to be on the sand early each day to cover of all the beach driving then after midday we hit the interior tracks and the dunes, and I love the dunes.

This is my plan at this stage, I will be leaving my place ( Pakenham ) at about 4.30am, I will be stopping for snacks, coffee's, probably need to stop for a leak given my 58year old bladder, also can randomly stop for photo opportunities, not to mention periodical stopping to tend to social media and if the plan is going well should be pulling into Hamilton at about 9am for some brekky and meet up with Kim and Lou who stayed at Hamilton Wednesday night, then onto Beachport by Midday.
I will pick up some local supplies and hopefully enough information packs from the beachport information center for all our participants, then check in at Southern Ocean Tourist Park with hopefully enough time left for a sneaky beach drive before dinner and refreshments, so that's my plan .

Not long now people, remember make sure you have your sand flags also a compressor as for many people you will be dropping your pressures lower than you ever have .
I will be picking up information packs for every vehicle, these also contain local maps, can't wait to see you all at Beachport.

Yes I can't wait! I been working tirelessly on the Navara getting it ready! So many goodies to test out on the tracks!!

I'm thinking of arriving early afternoon at the caravan park. No point in coming super early at 10.30 am.. Gonna be tired to go straight wheeling anyway! Probably arrive in early afternoon, setup camp etc and then maybe we go to the local beach for a spin (the one I showed the guys last year, it's a nice stretch of beach just flat and easy drive.. It's a different part to the tracks we'll be taking) if anyone is up for it.

Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
Also with everyone dropping out, I think we're not gonna need to be split up in 2 groups of 10 anymore...

Last year we were 9 in the convoy and we were always back to camp quite early! Easy driving! This year we need more time on the dunes!!!
14 Oct 2017
Trip Leader Allan (Big Pig) Premium Member
Thurstain , that was my plan for Thursday, hopefully be checked in by early arvo and have time for a quick spin up the beach, if for no other reason than to check how soft the sand is and also to get an idea how high high tide is .
And yes more time on the dunes .

Well guys this has really buggered a trip I was so eagerly looking forward to. I have just been on the phone to the repair shop - where the fj has been for nearly 2 months - and they've told me it won't be ready in time for the weekend away. I'm absolutely devastated.

Fortunately Al has put his hand up to take over leading the trip. He's well experienced with Robe and Beechport and will be an excellent leader for you all.

Sorry to have to pull out with such late notice. I hope you all have a wonderful time and look forward to seeing photos and videos.

If I didn't push the limits so hard the fj would still be going strong. It's a 95% vehicle and I keep trying to drive the other 5%.

It will be virtually new with all the repairs and going straight on the market to be replaced by a 'family wagon comp truck'. GU Patrol, to be heavily modified.

For those interested in a Convoy.. me and Steven are going to meet tomorrow morning at Ballan BP on the Western Freeway (https://goo.gl/maps/ysFQU9qDa5o) and will be leaving at 8AM.

It is roughly 5 hrs to Robe from there, so we are aiming to roll into Robe around 1PM. We will not be stopping much along the way maybe a quick 10 minute break somewhere but planning on driving straight to Robe.

Neil I remember you wanted to meet somewhere on the Western, let us know if your interested in convoying with us. Offer is open to anyone who wants to come. We will meet at the car park in front of the Maccas at the BP linked above. If your there, come along, otherwise see you all in Robe.

Winston was going 2 get sand flag off you can you get it to allen if not will work something out mate!

Dave, if Winston is unable to provide you one.. I'm pretty sure Robe has a MITRE10. Buy 2x1m PVC pipe and screw joiners (one male one female, unsure what they are called), an end cap, a trailer flag and zip tie to bullbar. I did that for last trip and lasted whole trip and coming with me again this trip (after a full year up on the roofrack!!) I also sprayed it black.

This way it comes into 2 parts of 1 meter and it's easy enough to store.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Might go beach way.

Also @alan do we have any indication of how many Km's a day we will be doing.
The big girl drinks and I average around 400-450 a tank.

so just wondering how many geri cans I will need (If any)?

Cheers,

Last year we dove under 50kms (in 2 days) on Sand according to my tracking.. however I'm sure we will need to travel between Robe and Beachport on bitumen etc (around 50km each way) but there is a servo in Robe so fuel should not be a problem and also there is a car wash to wash off the buckets of sand you collect in your chassis rails lol

EDIT: Keep in mind that in Sand it'll drink much more fuel.. especially if your going to be doing dunes and soft sand.

Sorry meant roll into Beachport around 1PM haha.. Not Robe. My bad.

Also I don't think there is fuel in Beachport, at least none of the ones that I'd trust putting their fuel in my tank.. But Robe isn't far and there is Mobil and I think Caltex and we might be travelling between the two (or close enough to drop into Robe). I'll probably fill up my tank somewhere on the way to Beachport probably at Millicent Caltex or BP (which is around 40km away from Beachport) so fuel should not be a problem.

See you all there! I'm nearly all packed.

What an awesome trip! The beach and the dunes were awesome. Couple breakages but hopefully everyone made it back safely.

Thanks to Winston for planning and to Allan for taking lead and made this trip happen. Campsite was pretty well setup, pub was good, alcohol and fun was aplenty! Really enjoyed those dunes and half the fun is getting lost in them! (which we did, multiple times)

The last beach we did with Neil upfront (the one some of you did Thursday) was a bloody challenge! Someday, a trip should be planned and that beach should be conquered once the tide is at a less scary height.

Looking forward to seeing some footage from all the drones we had!

Thanks everyone and see you all on the tracks.

Yes indeed. as most have mentioned, a massive shout out to Alan for leading this trip last minute. The feeling I got when Winston pulled out, was "ohhhh noooo"
Was pleased to hear it was still going ahead. :)

Was a trip to experience, met some awesome people on this trip which I am sure I will see again soon.

Thanks to Dave for lending me his fishing Rod when I caught probably my most biggest fish ever.
Also for hosting the main hot spot and organising the fire.

Will never forget your call when I bumped into you on the way to the toilet and I asked how you pulled up and your response "Feeling secondhand I tell ya" in a husky hungover voice. Cracked me up. Best response ever. lol

I will collate all the footage and photos and post the raw ones in the photos section of this trip.
I will also (attempt) make a fun video but also transfer the files to James so he can definitely work his editing magic. Not that he will need my files as he had some pretty awesome shots.
