Wombat Sunday Run MEDIUM

Wombat SF, VIC

See more trips

Just want to go out to Wombat SF and have a drive around see what we come across. Might visit some mines or other points of interest if we come across them (and if tracks are open). Will be a medium Sunday drive. Rough plan is to start with some easy tracks to the South-West of Leonards Hill (Wombat Plantation) which mostly is flat easy tracks, visit possible ruins of Wombat station and railway, disused mine close by and a small dam which we will visit if we can find it, and then we will cross Ballan-Daylesford Rd and get into the bigger side of Wombat.. might get in through Carrolls track and make it towards Colbrook Reservoir and explore that area and maybe make it all the way to Golden Duke Mine. Depending on time we can end the day there or I'll have the map and see what tracks we can tackle if it's still early. Most tracks are open around there and lots to explore.

Please be aware that this is gonna be a bit of an exploring trip so we will stop, do u-turns, look around and just enjoy the area. There is a lot of history and hidden things through Wombat and the aim of this trip is not to hit as many bog holes as we can.. but to really just go for a drive, explore and have some fun. Driving will be a mix of tracks and dirt roads... tracks are a mix of easy flat to a possible harder tracks with couple technical hill climbs, water fords, ruts, some mud for sure and hopefully nothing too extreme.

I only been to Colbrook reservoir and Duke Mine but never made my way through Carrolls track etc.. so conditions are a bit unknown - if I gain interest I will have a rough trip plan. If there are big bog holes or obstacles that we are not comfortable with... we can always turn back. Wombat can be a bit unpredictable so be prepared. Seen a few cars getting swallowed by bog holes, whenever I go Wombat I always stop and check depth... so don't be annoyed at me if I stop before every bog hole. I don't intend to drown my truck, I just want a safe browse and some Sunday fun.

Bring drinks and lunch if you wish. Colbrook is a nice place to stop for lunch.

Minimum setup sould be 32inch muddies or aggressive AT's and 2 inch lift.. I would not advise anyone with anything less to join just in case. Also snorkel is beneficial in case we need to do some crossings (I think Carrolls track has a crossing or two) and also in case you get stuck in a boghole. Low Range vehicles only.

WINCH advisable, UHF and FULL RECOVERY GEAR KIT IS A MUST and RECOVERY POINTS are also a must. Also please be prepared for MUD and PIN STRIPES! Vehicle DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.

Not planning on being too late, probably a few hours and head back home.

This filled up real quick! Wasn't expecting it to be honest. Awesome! Gotta find us a path now to make it from Carrols to golden duke mine!

Steven let me know how your pajero goes. I will probably open another couple spaces later today.

Hey guys,
Updated trip with 3 more spots. Also I have a rough plan, most tracks I never drove so conditions are unknown for the most part. Plan is to visit possible ruins of Wombat station and railway, disused mine close by and a small dam which we will visit if we can find them and we head to Colbrook reservoir and then to Golden Duke mine and depending on time we can end the day there or I'll have the map and see what tracks we can tackle if it's still early.

Driving will be a mix of tracks and dirt roads... tracks are a mix of easy flat to a possible couple technical hill climbs, some mud for sure and hopefully nothing too extreme.

Also I saw some people joining that haven't listed any lifts or have smaller tyres.. I am not going to kick you off the trip or anything, but I expect you to KNOW your car and what it can do.. so everyone is joining at their own risk. I will not force anyone to do anything they don't want to do. This trip is not ideal for first time 4wders.

Also, if you don't check-in through the website or at least post a comment saying you are coming... once 9.30 hits and you are not at the meeting point I will not wait for you unless you get in contact with me.

Yes Allan... Last trip we waited 30 mins for a no show.. I messaged the guy and no response.. Ever.

It's plain rude to just not show up and it's not fair for the team to wait up for somone who couldn't be bothered posting a comment or clicking check in button.. And then just not show up. Trip leaders should have a function to report no shows through the website.

Hey Steve,
Sorry just noticed your comment. For some reason it didn't email me about your comment! Will be awesome to see you again.

Hello everyone,
I asked for some knowledge from people that know the area and tracks more than me and they said that in some places some tracks can get real. I elevated the trip to Medium. Winch is highly recommended and make sure your car is capable enough to tackle tricky tracks and sections... UHF (handheld or otherwise) is a must also.

Read the revised trip description and make a decision based on the info provided. You are responsible for your vehicle, recovery gear etc..

Good call Thurstain, it's best to set the rating to more difficult (i.e. medium). I am not very familiar with the area but most of my experience has been great (well, VERY muddy). It would try to avoid all bogholes at all cost. I once nearly drown my truck when plugging into a boghole which is only around 5x5m which did not look deep at all. It was so deep that it's over my bonnet (I was running 6" on 35"). Those mud in Wombat will come back and haunt you if you like to play in the boghole. Have fun guys.

Hi Kelvin,

Yes upping the rating is better as I don't want people thinking this is going to be a cruise that a bogstock vehicle can handle.. And I don't want people to be disappointed.
The trip is pretty much split on 3 sections. Section one should be relatively flat and easy. Once we head into Carrols track things start getting tricky until Colbrook reservoir.. After Colbrook reservoir heading towards duke mine things will start getting gnarly.. Big bog holes, slippery hills and a few ruts.. I was told that some bog holes are around 1.2m deep with somewhat solid base but most of them have chicken tracks.. Although based on my experience some chicken tracks are harder or as bad as the main track lol.. But we will see how it goes.

I predict that winches will be out and recovery gear will get dirty. Good thing is that to reach our final destination there are various ways to get there.. I tried picking up a challenging way to get there but if it gets too hard we'll back out and try another way.

Also weather is predicted to be rainy, making the easier tracks a bit more challenging too.

Yes, just a friendly reminders to all the people coming (if you haven't mentioned already), make sure you double check your winch is working AND the winch controller is in your car. Make sure you have a recovery hitch, and if not, at least you have a tow pin. NEVER recover using a tow ball. Last by not least, bring your gumboot ;)
21 Jul 2017
Trip Leader Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
Yes Kelvin thanks for that. I guess I just expect that people should be prepared and check their gear.. Especially when I mentioned winches and recovery gear and recovery points about 5 times in trip description and comments... But definitely good to remind people.

Winches should be working condition, don't want to find electrical gremlins when your out bogged on the tracks
Winch controllers and remotes in your trucks
Front and rear recovery points
Recovery Kit with rated shackles, equaliser strap, snatch strap, extension strap and recovery snatch block. We will not use unsafe equipment because your not prepared (towball and the likes)

If you are not prepared, please remove yourself from the trip. Also scuba diving gear might be necessary lol.. And be ready to get dirty :D

There are quite a few ssc tracks around that side, basically all open tracks are easy. if you have time, around Blackwood are a few good mines, struck oil is a walk in, track behind the wombat sign into blackwood is a little bit of fun, back of dales creek can be good too. I may be out there myself sunday, my goto explore place is that side of the forest. cheers.

Yes there are some closed tracks but my plan is to stay south of them where it looks like all tracks are open.

Not sure about the easy tracks bit though as I talked with a few guys on the wombat group and they reckon the last half if my trip. Is gonna be quite gnarly.. But we'll see... If you see us around come say hi and if we're stuck give us a pull haha! We'll most likely be on channel 10.. Unless there's a lot of noise already on the channel.

Sorry Thurstain , I won't be able to make it. Mojo's car has an issue that needs addressing - he is disappointed as well and I hope he doesn't scrap the car either . However if he buys a different car - he should buy a GU Patrol or Jeep :)
No worries Steven. Maybe next time. If tomorrow is a success I'll probably run a similar trip again soon.. Hopefully you'll have your car sorted then.
