I am heading out the Simpson again this year, this time doing a North/South Crossing along the Hay River.

Haven't made any detailed plans yet, other than leaving Melbourne on the 29th of September an allow up to 4 weeks to get back to Melbourne.

There are permits involved (Hay River permit, SA desert parks pass, camping permits and fees).

That's my 4th Simpson crossing (all done solo before), happy to include surroundings if there is any interest.

You need a good working truck, with enough storage for fuel, water, beer - it's pretty remote.

you need fuel for about 1000km slow going sand driving.

Rough trip plan:

Gemtree (Last Fuel stop) to Batton hill to Poeppel Corner

From Poeppel corner depending on weather and track conditions I'd like to do a bit of a dog leg west/south to keep going via Rig Road and head out via Warbuton Crossing. If the tracks are open and there is enough fuel left I might go via Inside Track to Birdsville.

Permits:

Hay River transit permit - $200 per vehicle

Batton Hill Camping - $20 per person

SA Desert Parks Pass - $160 per vehicle http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/entry-fees/parks-passes/desert-parks-pass

Optional there are guided tours available at Batton Hill too.

I will organise the Hay River permit as a group permit (dead line 01/09/2017). Camping fees are payable in cash at camp.
