Wombat and Lerderderg State Forest MEDIUM

Wombat and Lerderderg State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Brandon (neighbours kid) and myself recently did a trip and thought it would great to lead our own excursion for 4wdtrip.com.  The tracks are open again in November and a trip to Wombat and Lerderderg will be great to wipe the winter cobwebs off the NIssan Patrol.

The tracks we will be traveling are Holts Road, Nuggety Track, Radcliffe Track, Charcoal Track + a few others if time permits.  Thought we would stop for a long social lunch if the weather is kind, so bring a chair and some snags. Family and kids welcome.

Although I have listed no winch or recovery gear as mandatory - you will be required to drive a low range 4wd that must have either excellent All-terrain or mud tyres (stock road tyres will not cut it, sorry). There are some reasonably steep tracks, steps and boggy sections on these tracks so your vehicle needs to be a competent 4wd. You must have rated recovery points front and rear.  I do not recommend first time 4wders or P platers attempting this trip, ideally you will have some experience 4wding. If there is rain then the tracks do change but still do-able with good tyres.  This is not a wombat boghole run.  Finally, you will need an air compressor to re-inflate your tyres for the trip home.

The above paragraph is intended for you to make an informed choice about both your & your vehicles capabilities and type of 4wding you like to do.

I would like to tag along. OH WAIT. I'm a p plater so I can't. How ridiculous is that, seriously mate, some p platers have a fair bit of experience. But I suppose to you fully license drivers always have better experience even if they have only been to the bush a handful of times.

I imagine his point was you need to be experienced. Being a P Plater doesn't preclude you being experienced, and if you feel you can comfortably do what's described, go for it.

I doubt he meant offence.

Daniel, next time please read what I wrote more carefully " I do not 'recommend' first time 4wders or P platers attempting this trip, ideally you will have some experience 4wding."

What I have written is in fact the opposite of what you have interpreted - what is written is two separate points. Point 1. clearly states that the trip is not 'recommended' for P platers or first time 4wders. After the comma then relates to..... Point 2. Anyone regardless of having a full licence or P plater must have 4wd experience in considering this trip as appropriate for them. Nothing in what I have written states you could not have joined the trip, I was simply offering advice and information.
.
However, it should be noted your wording in your post does not inspire confidence of your personal maturity. As it stands the trip is now full.

Gi-day all have joined or expressed interest in the trip to Wombat and Lerderderg Forests. To those who have expressed interest, generally as a trip gets closer people drop out making spots available for others to join, so keep an eye out for changes.

The tracks I have listed I know well but I am sure there are plenty I have also not heard of either and many unmarked tracks too. If any of you know other tracks in the area you would like to put forward I welcome any advice. I will be avoiding Anderson Mill Tk, however others like XL Link Tk, Diggers Tk and Matties Tk we may be able to fit into the day.

Looking forward to meet you all.

Rob, you may have to change the date as all tracks you plan to drive are seasonal closures that dont reopen until November 2nd.

Sorry everyone, I will have to move the trip to - 5 November 2017 - sorry for any inconvenience.

Kind regards

Actually, I am hoping over lunch to pick your brains about the trip you ran into Wombat State a couple of months or so ago. I am pretty familiar with Lerderderg but not so much with Wombat and would love to retrace your steps another day.

Yeah sure no worries. I might even run that trip again in a few months with skipping the initial easy part and start straight into the more fun part and cover more challenges. I had a chat with a few people and they shared some "secret" areas that if I'm lucky enough to find... will be an even better trip!

Just a note to say I am looking forward to meeting all the members who have joined up to go on this trip, I hope we have a great day. We will be meeting at the KFC Car park (opposite McDonalds) and departing at 9.30am so it is important to arrive a few minutes earlier. The UHF channel we will be using is 18. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Steve, not 100% sure, it will depend on how fast or slow the group travels. However, personally I would like to be heading home from Greendale sometime between 5pm and 6pm at the latest. This should get most people home well before dark I would have thought.

What an excellent trip Rob! Huge success and you ticked a lot of tracks that were on my bucket list! Must say we probably did the better one out that way without hitting bog holes etc.. Loved the hill climbs and excellent challenges, nothing extreme just good driving!

Gotta find a time to go tyre shop and get a new tyre! Drove home all good, decided not to go with Steven and Chris as didn't want any dramas with the plugged sidewall.

Thank you again. Probably will post a trip up early next year and will combine the trip I led last time and some of the tracks we drove today.. will be awesome fun.

Was good to catch up with people I met before and nice to meet the new ones!

Thank you to everyone for today, it was a great day meeting great people and now Lana, Brandon and myself know more people within 4wdtrip. I think I may have muddled peoples names up from time to time, I blame the early on set of Alzheimer's which also explains the couple of U turns, head scratching, while mumbling "I think we're heading in the right direction".

It was good to wipe the cobwebs off the Nissan, although the stories at lunch of submerged cars (Stephan), broken diffs and other mishaps Charcoal Tk was very tame in the dry. Mind you I did get the stink eye from Lana when I said "nope, this is the wrong way we have to back down and up the other side on Charcoal" followed by a resounding "whoo hoo" from Brandon in the back seat. Lana is still talking about Thurstain's "Licorice sticks" he used to repair his flat tyre.

Great bunch of folks, again thank you.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for leading this trip. Congratulations on a terrific day. Enjoyed meeting everyone and the tracks were perfect for my skilll level.
