Easy 4x4 Day Trip (Family and Kids are welcome) EASY / MEDIUM

Rubicon, Eildon, VIC

See more trips

Updated: 3 July 2017

Hi all see below the itinerary of this trip. The total distance is about 130km from Buxton to Eildon Dam. Most of the tracks are relatively easy, mainly in 4H or even in 2WD. There are couple section which may require 4L. We will assess the condition and make the call. Again, like any 4wd trips, there are always something unexpected. For instance, some tracks could be closed, or they no longer assessible. You may also get pinstripe if the tracks become overgrown. We will be travelling in a relatively high attitude above 900m. There will be chance that you will see snow this weekend, so make sure you bring enough clothes to keep yourself warm.

Some of the tracks/roads are unknown to me. I have highlighted them in brown.

  1. Buxton (Last fuel stop)
  2. Taggerty
  3. Rubicon Road
  4. Rubicon Hydro Power Station
  5. Royston Road
  6. Browns Road
  7. No.5 Track
  8. Snob Creek Road
  9. Conn Gap Road
  10. Conn Hill (1200m) -> This track is a dead end track, need to turn around
  11. Back to Snob Creek Road
  12. Herbs Road
  13. Morris Lookout
  14. Back to Herbs Road
  15. Snob Creek Falls
  16. Dry Creek Hill Road
  17. Eildon-Jamieson Road
  18. Barnewall Plains Road
  19. Torbreck Road
  20. RAAF Avro Anson Memorial Crash Site (1940) -> not sure if we can find it, it's on the map
  21. Back to Eildon-Jamieson Road
  22. Goulburn Valey Highway
  23. Jerusalem Creek Road
  24. Mt Pinniger Road
  25. Foggs Lookout
  26. Mount Pinniger
  27. Eildon Dam
  28. [Surprise track -> for those who dare to try, and if time permits]

Looking to run an easy/medium day trip near Rubicon/Eildon areas. This will be a great trip for those who are relatively new to 4wding. I will share my 4wding experience with everyone. It's aimed to be a family oriented trip. Family with kids will be more than welcome.

If time allows, we may head to Mt Terrible or Big River.

Hi Kelvin,
Conn Gap track, which I'm guessing Conn hill is the top of it, is not a dead end track... it ends back on Snobs Creek Rd (goes up and down the other end).. as far as condition goes, it's over grown in parts, muddy at the top, bit of ruts and awesome fun.. also tons of fallen trees (mostly the bigger cars will clear them by an inch)

Also while doing my research, I wanted to do Morris Lookout... but to me it seemed like track leading there was seasonally closed.. so double check.

Oh thanks for the heads up. Yes it does show deadend but good to know it's not. Herbs track is not SC so I think we can get there.

Where the mud starts at Conn Gap Track, there is a random track on the right... I'm not sure where that leads but it's not on any maps that I looked at.. so that one could be dead end.. but definitely the main track (Conn Gap Track) goes up and down the other end.

And According to DSE Map, Herbs is Closed. I wanted to go there but no way around it.

Yes please let me know how it goes.. as I might run another trip there if I get a free weekend where it's guaranteed snow and would love to go to the summit! I might also steal some of your tracks and add them to my future trip.

Enjoy.

Hi all please can you kindly arrive no later than 8.15 so we can aim at leaving Healsville at 8.30pm. This will give us plenty of time to travel and try to finish before 5pm.

Although this trip is relatively easy, be prepared for anything. Check your vehicle, winch, radio and recovery gear condition.

I will not allow any unsafe recovery to be performed. Please make sure you have a recovery hitch or at least the tow pin. Remove the tow bar before the trip if possible. Safety is our no.1 priority, then we can play hard :)

Always good to get out of the city. Sarah's favourite moment was being accosted about not buying lunch at the pub then slipping into the background as he launched a tirade about us taking up parking space! Ha Looking forward to the next one. Thanks Kelvin

Hi All, thank you so much for coming. It's great to meet some new members and hopefully we will meet again in the near future.

I hope you all had a great time exploring some of the best part in Victoria which is only 2 hours drive. Again, it's an easy trip, so we hardly did any tracks which need 4 Low. The last overgrown track is another good lesson learnt. Many tracks in Victoria are like this, it's on the map but until you start driving or exploring it, you never know if it's another hidden gem or a deadend track.

Thank you all helping each other to turn around on the last track, I have never experienced a 30 points turns....

The highlight of the track is certainly the snow. Can't wait to go back again.

Hey Kelvin,
How was the track that was a dead end going to Conn Hill? Worth going in? Or just keep on going on the main track?
