I'd love to join Kelvin, been really keen to lead my own trip but hold back a bit because I don't know that many areas yet and hate to have a convoy turn around mid track etc.

However, I'm not sure I can do that weekend.. It's a bit too far away of a date for me to know for sure.

Trip Leader Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
Hi Thurstain, I understand what you mean. I was like you at the beginning. But knowing how to read topo maps and using multiple maps (Roof top, Mud-maps) and other channels such as Facebook (Aussie 4wd Tracks), it will give you good information about the area or tracks.

The most important is to set the expectation when posting your trip. You can always mention that you are not familiar with the area, and will be exploring. In some cases, you may turn around and try different tracks. Nobody will blame you on anything, remember it's your trip and you are doing it voluntarily with no financial gain.

If you miss this one, I will run similar trip more regularly from now on.

Winston (Winston_FJ) Premium Member
Thurstain don't let that stop you at all. I've run several trips to locations I've never been before. Just let people know that it's an explore and you'll be fine. Ask for advice before you go. It's really not hard, once you've done one you'll realise how easy it is and from then on you don't have to wait for someone else to post a trip so you can go wheeling!

Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
Hi Kelvin and Winston,
Thanks for that. I already posted this yesterday on the forum https://www.4wdtrip.com.au/offroad/social/forum/read.aspx?originalpostid=9737&forumid=7

I might just do a bit more research and ask 4wd tracks group for any pointers... and will pull the trigger and post the trip up in a week or so. If it gauges any interest I'll do it. Might aswell. I'll make sure to set expectations beforehand.

Might still be interested in joining a trip leading training session tho if I can attend.

Hi sir,
I know what its like having a new born etc,
But if you had the opportunity to get out for the day I would be happy to pick you up and drop you back home if it meant that people would benefit from your experience on this trip too.

There's always a spare seat for you in my rig pal.

Hi all, I will open up 2 more spots at 9pm tonight. I have removed the requirement of minimum trips. Anyone can join as long as you are willing to lead a trip on 4WDTRIP.

Also for those who is already committed to join, have a think about what you need and what problem you faced when planning or running your trips in the past.

This Trip Leading trip is aiming for sharing information and experience with others. There won't be much driving, possible a few tracks around Walhalla, that's all. So don't expect it to be a full-day driving.

I also plan to break up the trip into number of small sections instead of a full-on 1 hour speech.

Ideally, it would be good for all of you to post a trip up if you have got some ideas where you want to go and lead, don't worry about the fine details, we can help.

It will be a cold day, make sure you bring enough clothes. Again, be prepared for anything, make sure you double check your vehicle condition, recovery gear, winch (and the remote controller), and radio are all in good condition.

Remove your tow ball, it's not going to help. At least you leave your tow pin if you don't have a recovery hitch.

Please can kindly ask everyone to arrive no later than 8.15am so we can leave at 8.30am sharp. Meeting at the carpark next to McDonald. (https://goo.gl/maps/exX9ewDGp6H2)

We will be on channel 10.

Hi everyone
Tomorrow I am thinking to head up to Mt Selma to find some snow while we will go through trip leading information on the way if anyone interested. If we do, be prepared to finish late. Please let me know if you are keen.

Jeez so many people dropped out!

I have plans for tomorrow which might get cancelled last second, if that's the case I will jump on. Mt Selma and snow would be awesome.. it will at least make the 2.5 hrs drive to Moe (5am wake up!!) worth it.

Haha I said the same to my wife. I am hoping we can get back to Walhalla no later than 6pm... again... depends on track condition... once I can see we have mobile reception I will stop for everyone to contact your family.

One more thing. The last fuel stop will be in Moe. So make sure you will have enough fuel for 150-200km offroad distance. Ususally your fuel consumption will be double your normal rate when going offroad (low-range). Bring a jerry can with you if you have one.

Hi all, thank you again for coming. I hope you have gained some knowledge of trip leading. There are still so much more to cover but it would be hard to go through everything in a day. The best way to learn is to get out there and try leading your first trip. It's NOT a rocket science. It's all common sense to be honest. I had no training whatsoever but managed to run 40+ trips in the past 2 years without any problems. Just bear in mind that safety first. Sometime it's better be safe than sorry and you may have to make some tough call.
I am happy to help if you do want to get in touch with me to find out more about trip leader, you can contact me directly (PM, email, facebook).....

It was a great day guys. Fulton Creek Track definitely had some characters in the wet. We managed to get everyone completed the track safely. There were some interesting section, it's all about trying and testing your skills, and to work as a team.

Until next time.

Glad everyone had a great day Kelvin. Fultons Creek Track has its moments in the dry, let alone when it is wet and good to hear everyone got through. Did you get up to Mt Selma?.
