Billy Goat Bluff, Mt Kent and beyond - 4x4 Adventure MEDIUM

Billy Goat Bluff, VIC

*** Update 20 June ***

  • Self Sufficient - Make sure you are self sufficient for at least 2 days. We will likely travel around 200 - 250km on unsealed road. Please make sure you bring enough fuel with you. The last place to fill up would be Dargo General Store. They open at 8am. We will fill up before we hit the track on Sat morning.
  • From weather forecast, there may be shower on the weekend. It will be cold, down to 9. Depending on the track condition, we may not do Mt Kent if the track is too wet. If that's the case, we will explore the surrounding area instead.

*** Update 13 June ***

- 23th June (Fri) - For those who would like to camp on Fri night, we will camp at Italian Flat Camp north of Dargo.

- 24th June (Sat)

  • Early morning start at 8am (Yes, we will hit the road at 8am sharp).
  • Italian Flat Camp -> Dargo -> Conway Tk -> Billy Goat Bluff Tk  -> Pinnacles (aiming to arrive before 10am)
  • Pinnacles -> Mt Kent (aiming to arrive at the bottom of Mt Kent by 12pm)
    • Mt Kent is a one way track lead to a helipad. The track is relatively overgrown so prepare for some pinstripe.
    • The last 500 meters is where the things get challenging (and interesting). It was a steep, rocky climb with deep ruts.
    • Since it's a one-way track, it means that you will need to turn around once you reached to the top.
    • I could only get up the first 20 meters on my last trip but we were running out of time so decided to come back another day.
    • For those who do not wish to attempt, you can turn around and back to a spot where we can meet (I will let you know where on that day).
    • IF the tracks are wet, we may decide to explore Mount Dawson next to Mt Kent.
  • Mt Dawson (Only if we can't do Mt Kent)
    • There is another deadend track/rd called "Shanity Hollow Road" leading to Mt Dawson. From the map, it is right next to Moroka Gorge so hopefully there will be a good view from there. I have never done this track before so I don't know what to expect. We will assess and decide.
  • Mt Kent -> Horseyard Flat Camp
    • Depending on the time we arrive. If we arrive early, we can try a track called "Cromwell Knob Track" which starts at Horseyard Flat Camp. This track will lead us back to Moroka Road so we can loop back to camp. This track is short, around 10km.

- 25th June (Sun)

  • Horseyard Flat Camp -> Moroko Hut (5 mins walk)
  • Moroko Hut -> Old Moroka Road -> Avon Tk -> Lower Block Tk
  • Finish at Newry (near Heyfield)

* This trip is for Sat and Sunday * I will likely camp at Dargo on Friday night, the 23 June. You can camp on Friday or arrive on Sat morning.

I will be running a trip to Billy Goat Bluff. There will be a few challenges along the way.

Currently I set this as medium trip. Depending on the weather condition, this could be medium/hard trip if it's wet on that weekend.

If this is Medium. Might give it a go. You think the GU without lockers will handle it okay?

Haha, yes mate, Billy Goat is relatively easy. A stock 4wd can do it without problem.
However, Mt Kent is a different story. We will check it out at the bottom and see if it's doable first.

Hi Kelvin, I see the trip is full. If someone pulls out I would love to come. Haven't done a trip from this website before so don't know if you're looking for people you know or what.

Not at all mate. I don't just invite people I know. In fact I like to go on trip with people I have never met too. I know what you mean about not being able to join a trip before it is full. Unfortunately some members are fast to join and thats why we need more members who can help run trips. I may open up a few more spots but at this stage I will probably keep it 10. Otherwise it could be slow going

Hi Guys
I dont want to put a dampener on the trip. However has anybody looked at seasonal road closures for the area you are travelling in. You will find there are a lot within the Mount Kent / Billy Goats Bluff area.

I will be in Dargo Friday night, but being the lazy bastard I am , I am looking at an option that does not require me to set up my awning, stretcher and swag in the dark, how ever I will be warming my self around the camp fire.

Good morning....right the disco is all but ready for the trip, hopefully she keeps up with all the 35" tyres etc... you boys have!!! What's the weather/track condition meant to be?
20 Jun 2017
Trip Leader Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
Excellent Ross, good to see you prep your car a few days before the trip (1 LIKE from me).

Haha, 35" is generally overkilled at High Country. This may be different stories at Mt Kent. I will assess the track and weather condition on Sat morning when we are heading up to Billy Goat. If the tracks are too wet and slippery, we may not do Mt Kent.

From the weather forecast, there may be a few shower but it will be definitely COLD. Looking forward to sitting next to a big camp fire :)

If anyone hasn't informed me when you will arrive, please do so now.

If you're coming up the highway probably fuel up at Stratford.

The last place to fill up would be Dargo General Store. They open at 8am. We will fill up before we hit the track on Sat morning.

If you're coming from Melbourne you'd be better off filling up at Stratford then topping up in Dargo. 💰💰

Hi guys, just updated the trip details on Sat. Depending on the track condition, we may decide not to do Mt Kent if it's too wet. If that's the case, we will explore Mt Dawson which is next to Mt Kent. There is a one-way (deadend) track to Mt Dawson so we will need to turnaround. I have never done this track so we will assess and make decision along the way.

It's important you know that tracks condition changes all the time. I cannot quarantee the trip will be run as planned. There could be deicision that need to be made on the spot.

There could be recoveries, winching and pinstripe. So make sure you are prepared for this. This is a medium trip, and if wet, it will be medium/hard.

Make sure you have checked your vehicle, and winch is in good condition. Don't forget to bring your winch control.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Fri/Sat. If you want to meet us on Sat, please arrive Dargo at 8am.

We will be on channel 10.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi everyone, unfortunately I won't be there until 9pm. I have an interview at 4pm in the city which I cannot miss. Sorry about that.

I think Dave will be there around 4pm. If you could find a spot which is good and big enough for our group, it would be great. I think we will have 7 cars camping tomorrow night.

See you all tomorrow night.

I should be getting away about 1to 1.30 from Pakenham but I will need to stop somewhere before phone reception runs out to do my 15 minute radio spot at 4 to 4.30, so I imagine I would be in Dargo around 5.30, I have a box of dry kindling , will I need to collect fire wood on the way in or will someone be at camp early enough to take care of this, also who is bringing a chainsaw.
22 Jun 2017
Trip Leader Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
I will have 2 bags of wood and chainsaw but will arrive late sorry guys. I am hoping I can leave city before 5pm. I will likely arrive 9-10pm.
22 Jun 2017
Jason (FauxBogan) Premium Member
I'm bringing a chainsaw but would appreciate if others brought theirs too. I'll be there around the same time as you, so we can get the wood sorted once there if it isn't raining. I'll grab a bag off wood if it is. See you soon.
22 Jun 2017
Ross (Rosco_4x4)
I'm aiming to leave Newport for around 12-1o'clock...., so hopefully traffic permitting I'll be at camp for 5pm, don't have a chainsaw but can grab some wood on route to help with the heating situation.....
