Filming trip - Woods Lookout Track, Rocky Track and few more (Series 3) HARD

Narbethong, VIC

See more trips

This is a technical hard trip aiming for filming some of the most ironic challenging 4wd tracks in Victoria.

The tracks will include Rocky Track, Woods Lookout Track and a few more if time allowed.

I will set this trip for those who have driven these tracks before (with no breakage) and with at least a few years of 4wding experience. Your vehicle will need to be at least 32" (twin locked) or 33" (at least one locker). If you have a different setup vehicle, please contact me first before you join the trip.

Note: This is not a hand-holding trip so I will expect you are a competent driver with a well setup vehicle ready for technical difficult hard 4wd tracks.

Happy for someone to lead a 2nd group behind us if you know the direction... @Arminder?

Hey guys just a heads up for all coming along, as this is a filming trip it will be slow going. It will involve a lot of radio communication and some waiting for me to get into position for the right shots. Patience will be a key factor but the reward will be having some fantastic footage of challenging and technical driving.

Fellas, I think a second group for this trip might be on the cards, we have enough interest. We can time our run an hour or two before/after the first group. We can get the planned route information from Winston so we can stay on the same path.

Is there anyone who is familiar with this area who would be happy to lead?
06 Mar 2017
Tim (UAV)
Well that didn't take long to fill up! Looking forward to it 👍

Hey Armin,
Looks like there is enough interest for a second group. Seeing you are familiar with the area would you like to lead the second group?

Sorry boys I just saw all the emails now yeh sure I wouldn't mind doing that.
But would you guys be filming the second group though

I can lead a second trip if people are interested, have done Toolangi plenty of times and know some cracker tracks, George would be great to finally catch up with you on the tracks if your keen for a run

Sorry guys only one filming "crew"... I'd love to spread myself around but as it is important already stretched too thin.

I am not concerned with the filming side, just happy to do a trip for those who missed the boat and want to go for a drive on some hard tracks

Sounds good Matt, thanks for sticking your hand up. Let's make it official.

Would definitely be keen to come in the second group. I have a rd28 gq patrol on 36s with 3inch lift, sliders and winch. Would my rig be capable for this trip in the second group?

Trip Leader Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
Alright guys, I think it's best for second group to decide the difficulties and the route. For this group, we will be filming at Rocky Track, Woods Lookout Track, possibly Joe Spur Track if time allowed. I don't mind whoever lead the second group, just post the trip with the necessary information, I will help you publish it.

I am meant to be heading out this weekend and am trying to get my new sliders fabricated in time for this Saturday.
If i do get away this weekend I won't be able to head away the next.

Toolangi is a Greta place and know it quite well now.
If its going to be a "hard" trip I highly recommend rocky and walking track

Was up there a month ago and had to recover a twin locked vehicle that snapped a cv on walking track.
Not for the faint hearted

I hope your rig would be OK, I only run 32's and have done all the hard tracks at Toolangi and without breaking anything, its not that hard a place as long as you pick your lines and drive sensibly, I just need to get a small issue with my car sorted, hopefully Friday, if all good I will lead a trip and post it up. We will do Rocky and a few other challenges but not Walking track, 32s are just asking for trouble and I am doing Border track soon so don't want any more issues...

Matt, how did you go with your car? All fixed? Is it possible to post a trip with locked in attendees, so that people who already registered interest for group 2 don't miss out on securing a spot?

I talked to Matt yesterday seems his car may not be ready. I may open up few more spots in my group if nobody wants to lead the 2nd group. It will be slow going but its a trade off...

My plan is to do Rocky, Joe Spur and finally Lookout Track. Happy for the 2nd group to follow us say 30 mins behind but I still want someone experienced to lead it. Please respond if you are still interested in 2nd group and if you are willing to lead. Thanks guys.
12 Mar 2017
Dario (CrawlingGQ)
I'm still keen. Haven't been to that area before but might be able to use GPS marks to lead the second group if no one else does. And if there isn't enough for group 2, I'll happily jump in with you guys.

Matthew (discomatt)
My car is still making some horrid creeks and clunks, my mechanic says its the rear trailing arm bushes, am hoping to get it sorted this week but not 100% sure so can not commit to running a trip. IF I get it sorted I am happy to run a trip but being a short week will be very late notice. Sorry for the lack of commitment but don't want to say yes then let people down.
12 Mar 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Definitely no second trip for me, mechanic is totally booked out this week and even though we have located my issue, dodgy rear trailing arm bushes, I don't go 4wding unless the car is 100%.
Will hopefully be able to post a trip to Toolangi sooner rather than later, just got to find some time...

Can I suggest that perhaps group #2 sets off in advance of us? We will be travelling more slowly due to filming requirements.

Just did a bit of a last minute check on the Disco, apart from a flat battery (I don't drive it every day) I'm ready to go. Going to be a long day but I don't get out much so should be good, haven't really pushed the Disco too hard for a while.

See you there.

It's only 1 day to go! Please make sure you double check your vehicle and your recovery gear, including a working winch. The plan is to meet at Healsville Beechworth Bakery, then head to Woods Lookout Track as our first track of the day. It is a short but very technical track. For those who have never driven Lookout Track, your jaw will drop at first glance. Let's take our time to tackle the track. Bear in mind that this is a filming trip, it will be slow going due to re-positioning of camera. Once we have finished Lookout Track, we will head to Joe Spur Track which is located at Narbethong. Joe Spur Track is a steep, long rocky hill climb. Once we have completed Joe Spur Track, we may explore the area and find couple more tracks if time allowed. At this point, I may not do Rocky Track due to the distance from Joe Spur Track. I am open for suggestions at the point. I plan to finish the trip at 3-4pm.
We will work as a team, help each other, have a safe and fun day out. Be responsible and tread lightly.
Looking forward to meeting some of the new faces. See you all on Sat 8am. We will be on Channel 10.
Cheers
Kelvin

Doesn't look like a second trip is being organised, I will run a hardish trip to Toolangi or somewhere near by in a few weeks when things at work settle down, I get my car sorted and a couple of other already booked trips done.
Have fun on this one and looking forward to the video footage.

Looking forward to the footage.

Good trip report Winston, as mentioned it was a cracking day to go wheeling even if for me it was a 400 plus km round trip but well worth the effort. Good driving and good company makes for a great days four wheeling regardless of issues encountered.

Bugger about the clutch Dario, hope you get it sorted soon.
