What sort of setup would you think is needed for this?
02 Sep 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
A simple and reliable one

I'm talking in terms of lifts, tyres etc. Mine is IFS suspension, 2 inch lift 32 inch muddies, winch etc etc.. Anyway have a look at my profile. It's a young car (only done 100k so far), serviced and reliable.

Yes have to agree . 10 days nowhere near enough . We did it a few years back and had 6/7 weeks from Melbourne with 2 weeks cairns /tip/cairns and it was a bit rushed
Palm creek was by far the hardest crossing then but I think the original crossing is impassable now

Don (Maddon)
yeah / palm creek was a bit interesting although the only place we got stuck was on the five beaches and that was ok when we let the air out of the tyres

John, good on you for setting the plan in motion to live the dream.

But as others have pointed out 2 weeks ain't enough. I did the drive from Melbourne to Cairns when I moved up there. It's a 3 day drive if you really push yourself as a minimum, so there's 6 days knocked out of your 16 (3 weekends, 2 weeks) already. If you want to go fishing, want to actually take in the experience of one of Australia's most epic and iconic 4wding trips, then you are really gonna be looking at around 20 days off work as a minimum.

If the disco isn't your daily driver, I would suggest trucking it to Cairns and back and flying yourself and your son up. It's a long and boring drive with very little worth seeing along the way. It'll cost more than driving but what's the price on setting out feeling refreshed on the real start to your journey?

If you've always dreamt of doing this drive - and having done CREB as a passenger years ago I speak from experience - don't rush it. Take your time and enjoy it. Your memories of the trip will be much better and the stories you will be able to tell fellow 4wd'ers at future trips and meets will be much more captivating.

All the best for your planning.

Look at the dates posted people... 1st-28th that's 4 weeks 10 days from Bramwell Junction to the tip and back to Bramwell Junction. Personally I would allow an extra couple of weeks but not everyone can take that much time off work. If I join the trip we would high tail up then slowly go from Cains to the tip and slowly make our way down south.
There is no way I would take my camper to the tip but would consider taking it up 80% of the way then leave it somewhere and tent the rest, the river crossings, Gunshot and the like would be to much IMO to take the camper through and there is no way I am going around the challenges if going that far...
From previous research and chatter on other forums there are no transport companies that will truck a fully loaded 4by from Melbourne to Cains any more but Big All recently trucked Big Pig so will have a chat to him and get some details for those who may be interested in that

Mathew, I have looked at the dates listed, I'm confused, looks like 2 months to me, start of June to the end of July
03 Sep 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
yep you are correct my bad, I was thrown by the 10 days and 2 weeks comments...
2 months?? Might wait for John to confirm dates as that seems to be going to the other extreme but hey 2 month holiday sounds awesome to me

Don (Maddon)
two months would be fantastic - you could do the lava tubes on the way

Sounds good John. We were planning a trip to the Cape in September with a group of friends however it now seems to be on the rocks. Have you definitely locked in the duration of the trip? Not sure if we can do 2 months as we had planned a 5 week trip in which case it would be great to partially join your crew. Happy to discuss further. Cheers

Matt I would surgest camper trailing it to Bramwell Junction, this is the start of the Tele track , they have a secure yard to hold your camper, or as an alternative stay at Bramwell Station its about a 600,000 hectare cattle station the drive in from the main road is about 5kays , they have accom. and camping hot showers and washing machines and a new bar and bistro it's also only about 10klms from the start of the Tele track.

I would certainly agree on the time needed. We went 5 years ago, it is a long drive up, and we took 4 weeks out of Cooktown to explore. Weipa, all the main side tracks, right to the Cape. We left CT as soon as the roads were open, the roads were all freshly graded and the main drive was easy. It was getting pretty chewed up by the time we returned. We did a few of the crossings on the Old Tele, but we balked at some - you could be there for two days just crossing one river! Met several who had ruined two new tyres just crossing one small creek.
Can thoroughly recommend Bramwell Station as a place to stay and as a place to leave your van/trailer.

WITHDRAWN from Trip - Reason: Pulling out of this trip as my group will be progressing with either a Cape York trip in September or Frasier island in August. Will post the details if we have enough room in the convoy for others to join. To those of you who will be lucky enough to head off on this trip... Have a great time!

Shae (The Battleship)
I'm up here now. Just did the CREB and going to do the Old Coach Road in the next few weeks. I'll be heading to the tip via the Tele at the end of the month some time, i'll be happy to do it all again next year!

Trip Leader John (Disco_Johnsy)
Hi all, based on recent discussions in this thread it seems I need to allow more time to do this trip. I am therefore negotiating extra leave from work and will post dates shortly. please note that dates will fall into the two month bracket as per the original post.

A few things to note are;

I will lead this trip but I have never done this track so we will all need to work as a team to get it done safely. We are all there to help each other; however, you should be self-sufficient with recovery, especially if we leave earlier on in the season which means we encounter more mud and deeper crossings.

Ok sorry everyone as the trip is not for another 8 months my mind has focused elsewhere. I've had to purchase a new car and my Dad had a heart attack last month up at Conargo so I've had to be up there a fair bit to help on the farm (I'm in Melbs).

As of today this trip is going ahead and my thoughts we come back to logistics of it ASAP. Thanks, John.

I may join. It'll depend on whats happening around that time, jobwise and whatnot.

If I do, it seems it'll be a convoy of defenders. You may have to add another couple of days to the travel times haha
22 Oct 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
Sorry to hear about your Dad John, hope he is recovering well. Plenty of time to work out the logistics so no stress for me but we are lucky in that kids are grown up and I am self employed so no need to worry about booking time off.
At this stage we are thinking we will travel up solo and catch up with family along the way between Melbourne and Cains then catch up with the group from there.
What we do need to do is book a date for everyone going or interested to catch up for a meet and greet and sort some details over a BBQ and frosty

Oh shut up. Good person is debatable in your circumstances - no empathy. Sounds like I dodged a bullet in your case.

Sorry all. As stated in an earlier post my Father had a heart attack so have been away helping on the farm, hence slow replies. The leave thing can't be avoided, I can only get 16 days off which was always the case, all organised prior to posting up the trip. I am going anyway, but as everyone has else has told me in earlier posts this is not enough time for them, so I'm doing it my way.

Hope I didn't waste too much of your time.

Hi all, I will remove this trip from the site. John, sorry to hear what happened to your dad. Please send my regard.

Sorry for those who have been affected due to the changes in circumstance. However, trip leader do have responsibility as outback trip require a proper planning up to 12 months beforehand.

4WDTRIP will review this and have better system in place for running outback trips.
