Little / Big Desert Vic. MEDIUM

Little Desert, Big Desert, VIC

See more trips

Come and try something different, known for its sand driving and dunes. Another great place to wheel within our state of Victoria. Very beautifully national park that is in every part a scaled down version of our bigger deserts.

The meeting point will be the Langi Ghiran camp ground ruffly 10kms Sth of Ararat (pic#1). Direction are, head 34.0kms Nth out of Beauford on the Western Hwy. turn right onto 'Langi Ghiran Picnic Ground rd'. Travel 1.5kms up the road to the Camp Grounds. To save getting up at 'Stupid oclock' Saturday morning and driving 3hrs to the meeting point a few of us will be heading up Friday afternoon and camping at the meeting point overnight, all are welcome to join us.

Day #1 Saturday

Day #1 will see us leaving the meeting point @ 1000 for the short run to Ararat for a quick take-away coffee then track west to The Grampians where we will explore so of the 4wd track the national park as to offer. I have tried to plan our route to include some of the Grampians scenic points of interest including Boroka Lookout (pic #2) and MacKenzie Falls (pic #3) before departing the Grampians via Wartook Reservoir to whind our way up to Horseshoe Bend camp ground at Little Desert National Park.

Day #2 Sunday

Day #2 will start by breaking camp at 0900 with a drivers briefing to decide the days route. At this stage I haven't planed a route as there is over 400kms of tracks to drive in total within the National Park and with the track report being that most tracks are deep sand I am predicting a few snatches required through out the day. Please keep in mind that the idea of this trip is to explore another of Victoria's Nat Parks and to gain experience in driving in sand for future trips to the Simpson Desert and Fraser Island. The day will end with a Northward trek 72kms to the camp ground at Lake Albacutya on the outskirts of Wyperfeld National Park (Big Desert) where we'll find the dunes. The route will see us pass through Nhill where we can refuel and re supply.

Day #3 Monday

Once again breaking camp and a driver briefing at 0900 to plan out the day. The day should see us head to the dunes to try and get to the top. These dune are renowned for not being as easy as they look and will take more than 1 attempt to make it to the top. Camp is planed to be just s/west of 'Big Dune' for the night where a good fire and afew beers await.

Day #4 Tuesday

Nothing planed for the last day, I will leave it upto the group as to what we do. My best guest would be a slow trip home via scenic land marks and points of interest as we will be 630kms from Melb which Google says is 71/2 hrs.

Is this trip suitable for camper trailers
02 Jul 2014
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Yep I can't see why camper would be an issue, just as long as you are prepared to pull it through the sand.

Shiny- any ideas on a better date?

Ok so you're not base camping but packing up each day and moving on.

Steve (tasl)
I have done Little desert a few years ago found it a little easy.

Queens birthday camped at Lake Albacutya. Just past Rainbow. Great campsite, Proper toilets. Cold showers. Camper Freindly, If you want to base camp. At the start of the Milned rock track. More challenging.
02 Jul 2014
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Yeah I recon it would be better if we where more mobile. If everyone is keen for 4 days / 3 night we could do the Grampians on the way up (night 1), Little Desert (night 2), Big Desert (night 3), then the Pyrenees on the way home. Kinda like a 4 day tour. Any suggestions welcome

Does any one know how far you have to go for fuel each day?

I would definitely be interested. would have to look at fuel though, seeing as a 4.8 GU, is not a Prius when it comes to economy bahhaha

Done a lot of work up around Hattah through to Renmark SA, and it is awesome country :)
29 Jul 2014
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
I've just been looking at my HEMA Explorer and there is fuel in very close proximity to both Natinal Parks. So unless you have a hole in your tanks you won't have an issue :-)
30 Jul 2014
Shannon (orangeshannon)
Just seeing what's going on is this trip still going to happen? I'm up for like what Chris said about fuel I only have a 300 k range out of a tank but knowing that fuel is close by I'm more keen :D
08 Aug 2014
Matthew (discomatt)
if my gas guzzling 4.6 disco can do it any 4by should be ok fuel wise although I do have 60 l of LPG and 80 l petrol but I will still take 2 gerry cans

Any definate plan on tracks and meeting place yet, I like the idea of leaving friday arvo, it would be late after work for me but if we can get 3/4 of the way there friday night it would make for a better day saturday. Maybe set up camp in the grampians somewhere then its only a short trip to little desert and that would give us a full day exploring, then onto big desert saturday night or sunday morning for another day then back to the pyrenees monday, don't know the area at all but have heard there is some great tracks there. Anyone know the area that can give us some must see or do ideas.

We had a trip to Pyrenees Ranges few weeks ago. There are some great tracks, mainly hill climbs. Some of them are very steep and rocky! It will definitely test your skills and 4by. @Jase, I may talk to you next week, may give you a hand on planning to trip.

Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Hi Matt, I am currently planing the trip in great detail at the moment, and will update everyone in the next week or two as to the proposed route and meeting points. To give you a very brief idea the official meeting point will more than likely Ararat @ 0900 leaving @ 1000, up to Halls Gap for lunch then through The Grampians and up to Little Desert to set up Camp, beers and BBQ. Day 2 will be exploring Little Desert National Park then up to Lake Hindmarsh to camp overnight. Day 3 will see up driving the dunes of Wyperfeld National Park (Big Desert) before setting up camp at Lake Albacutya. Day 4 well be decided by the group weather we head back through the Desert, head up to Sunset Country, head home via The Pyrenees or even Mt.Ben Nevis or even a slow trip back to Melb in time for the Melb Cup. Like I said this is just a ruff guide to what I have in mind for the trip. Me and my family will be heading off Friday arvo and camping out overnight around Ararat so as we bount have to get up at 'stupid o'clock' to drive 3hrs to the meeting point. You are more than welcome to join us if you like along with anyone else for that matter. Also keep in mind that we will be in daylight savings time so the days will be warmer but the nights in the desert will still be a bit chilli.

More to come......

Hi Jase,

Thanks for the update. It looks like a good plan to me. Perhaps you could paste them at the Trip Details area as well so that others can see them and for those who are interested in joining the trip. Once you have confirmed the details, you can update it again. Just a thought....
Thanks

yeh jase i'll be going up the day before as in the seirra she tops out at only 80k so takes ages to get anywhere far away. so what i thought i'll do is because im the slowest and so i dont piss everyone off i'll be leaving before everyone when we do long distance driving (anything over 80).
do you also know where abouts in Ararat you'll be staying would if be like a holiday campsite park or something that you'll need to book? if you do put me and my misuses down and we'll meet you up there.
might get your number and give you a call a couple weeks before we go up o just confirm everything.
only 4 weeks agos getting excited

Hey Bubby. There are a few of us heading up Friday night too. We'll be camping in the NP just south of Ararat, no fee's or booking required. I am currently in the process of finishing up the trip itinerary and hope (with kelvins help) to get it loaded up here by the end of the weekend. The itinerary is very complete and should help out everyone with there fuel/mileage issues.

I am still a definate at this stage but unfortuantly Lisa has to have a operation late next week so I might have to pull out if recovery is not going well or if there are any complications, will just have to wait and see, although I do have her blessing and at this stage she is insisting go.

hello jase,
this trip is classed as medium and for getting experience for the simpson which is what we want to do....
we are not "exactly experienced" - but managed the andyh trip warby to reefton last saturday without any dramas ....
we would not want to be the handbrake on the trip but are keen to get experience - how do we suss out if we can manage this one?? lol
20 Oct 2014
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
My advice will be join the trip and come along. I have no sand experience eather and it's going to be a learning curve for us all. I have purposely designed the trip so as we have more than enough hours of daylight to recover everyone if the situation arises. I am sure that we all will get stuck through out the weekend so no need to feel like you might not 'cut the mustard'. Beside the trip isn't just about the driving, for me it's trip prep for an extreme climate like the Simpson which I to have on my bucket list.

Ps. Thinking of running a trip next year to Dalhousie Sorings via the Oodnadatta Track which is also a prelude to The Simpson, The Canning Stock route and The Pilbra if you are interested.
20 Oct 2014
Matthew (discomatt)
I am no expert but have done fraser island twice now so about 1000km on sand mmm that is a lot now I think about it and its not that hard, its all about tyre pressure and the correct amount of momentum and go pedal, there is only 1 way to learn how your vehicle will handle it and that is to get out there and have a go.
20 Oct 2014
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)

As far as leaving time still not sure what to do, long weekend and friday arvo traffic will a nightmare, even more so for people from the eastern side, either on the freeway by 2, 2.30 at the latest or after 7 ish or the first 100ks will average 40km/h

***NEW DEVELOPMENT***

All, after ringing Parks Vic today to get an update on track conditions re the storms we had on Monday I was told that 2 out of the 4 campsites we are to stay are have to be booked and payed for in advance. This is now conflicting information that I was originally working with so I was not aware of this. I will get back intouch with parks tomorrow morning and re post up here which site need to be prepaid. Sorry for this, hope it doesn't put anyone out.

Ok, after ringing Parks Vic, DPI and afew other departments I have found out the follow.

- All the campsites are free and no need to book with the exception of one, Horseshoe Bend. I have provide the link below so
as you all can pre-book your spot WHICH IS A MUST.

- Collection of firewood is permitted as long as it is laying on the ground and must be cut by hand.

- Western Beach Campground has showers, flush toilets and rainwater tanks (but may not be full and may need boiling first).

*** You'll need to book Horseshoe Bend Campground for Sat 1/11/14. This campsite is part of the Little Desert NP.
