What side of Tassi are you thinking, Liza and I did the east coast years ago but have never done the west which is where all the serious 4wd tracks are, would be keen on a west coast trip to tackle Belfour and the like
14 Jan 2015
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Yep, I recon Belfour in hi on the 'must do' list.

Matthew (discomatt)
I will ask Allanmac to post his video of his Belfour experience, it is certainly a eye opener, unfortuently there were a few other issues that happened on his trip that put a real downer on it, might try and talk him into another crack at it. A top trip with everything from sand beach driving to rugged bush tracks with unspoiled and untouched bush, nature at its best.

Luke (bushstig)
Did a little bit of 4wding on the west coast about 6 years ago on my honeymoon and it was great. Just watched the new 4wd action dvd & got me thinking about tassie again. Very excited! Thanks Jase.

Thanks Matt, but not sure how to put a video up..?????? You are right though, Balfour was an experience & put a 'dampner' on the trip then to top it off the next day was the big incident.

Anyway Jase, have been there twice, 1st time in February 2009 & the 2nd time was the eventful trip in September 2010. Am just expressing my opinion here, doesnt make me right or wrong, but my thoughts after two trips down there.

1. If you plan to do some of the serious 4wding on the West Coast, think about limiting how many vehicles go & if some are taking camper trailers, they are not suitable for many of the tracks; including many parts of the beach.

2. February is the best time to go; still very warm to enable plenty of swimming etc. Also Balfour will have very little water in it unless it is a wet summer. Also west coast is always windy, so much more bearable on warm days.

3. Vehicles have to be in 'tip top' condition, if not they will be found out on the west coast.

4. Permits are required for many parts of the West Coast and are easy to purchase.

5. Day sailings are generally cheaper, but IMO, a waste of a day as it is a bloody boring trip just looking at ocean...lol.

If you have any questions etc, feel free to ask & for those going am sure you will all have a fantastic time. I would have expressed interest in the trip, but you have more than enough members going/interested.

Ok all, just a quick heads up,,, I got onto the Spirit of Tasmainia website to do a dummy booking to get a price. My booking was based on 2 Adults and 2 kids in a 4 berth cabin with a car over 2.1 mtrs RETURN. Price was just over $1350. There are cheaper options available to you, eg. You choice of acom. Also note that I was unable to book more that 12 months from now (March / April 2016 not available at this point in time), so we hopefully will get it a little bit cheaper for booking 12 months in advance.

A few good vids on EARTH from a Christmas trip from Steve 223, couple of tracks that would be on the must do list but not with a group of 10 plus cars as they look like a challenge that could go pear shaped pretty quick
28 Jan 2015
Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Everyone go out and get the latest 4wdAction (228) Mag with DvD and have a look at the Tassie track they hit, OMG,,, Its called the 'Money Pit' because every car does at least $1000 worth of damage.

Just an update....

I'm working very hard on gathering all the info needed to make this trip as good as it can possibly be. I've also keeping in close correspondents with the ferry company to get us the best possible deal I can muster. Over the winter period I'll be call a meeting to outline the trip, pricing, dates, etc for the group to comment on.

Working hard to please you all, Jase.

Hi Jase, sounds like you have a big job ahead of you! We went to Tassie a few years back, didn't do any 4WD tracks as we had a toorak tractor at the time.

We found Feb was the best time to go as the weather was the warmest for the west side. It gets bloody cold on the west side even in Summer.

we past Montezuma Falls Track going into Strahan and wet our tyres at the beginning of the track and said we'd be back one day! Not sure what it's like.

We managed to get a great deal on the Spirit of Tassie, I'll try and find the tickets and post how much it costed us.

We took the tent and it was really hard to pitch a tent due to all the rocky ground, so camper trailer or rooftop tents seem to be the way to go.

Noticed you have alot of interest in the trip, is it worth thinking about having a base camp and splitting the vehicles up into lots of 10 and doing a few different tracks per day as groups and then swapping the groups so everyone gets to do all the tracks but not waiting in a traffic jam on the tracks? so possibly having a few trip leaders to take groups on the tracks.
No sure if there are a few tracks close to each other, that would only work if they were close to each other.

Definitely interested in coming to tassie and doing 4WDing now we have a real 4by! :-)

Loved the Vid Allanmac! held my breath though. LOL

Hi Jase, was a bit bored at work, so did a couple of price comparisons as can now book for the dates you proposed; Sat 26th March and I had returning April 10th, (not sure if that is your return date though). One thing I will say; if you are taking a camper, be prepared to pay!.

1st costings based on 2 adults staying in basic private cabin with porthole, (worth it imo), a vehicle and camper trailer. Take note, they now charge extra if you have a nudgebar/bullbar & towbar, so do include if you have them as they do generally check.
Cabin accommodation - $744.00
4wd & camper - $806.00
TOTAL COST: $1550.00

Without camper trailer but same accomodation details.
Cabin accomodation - $744.00
Vehicle with towbar etc $186.00

TOTAL COST: $930.00

As I mentioned, a huge cost savings without camper trailer/caravan.
The 'ocean recliners' instead of cabin will reduce the above costs by $264 per couple but I can tell you from experience, dont expect to get much sleep as they are not all that comfy; a bit like a normal airline seat.

The absolute cheapest option is 'day ticket' for the day sailing on Sunday March 27th & returning April 10th also, as they have both a day & night sailing this day.
Total cost for 2 adults and vehicle (no camper) is $510.00 return. Add $468.00 (total $978.00) if taking camper trailer.

Maybe it is worthwhile for those intending to go to get on the Spirit of Tasmania website and have a bit of a 'play' looking at the various options.

Unfortunately, I doubt whether you will get any big discounts as 26-27th March is the start of school hollies PLUS it is the Easter weekend.

Hope you dont mind me posting this Jase, but as I said, was a bit bored at work so looked at the prices cause if Cheryl & I dont do the 'Kimberley' next year we may consider doing Tassie in Feb or early March, but as we would be taking the camper, am not sure if it is worth it as I think it is outrageous the extra they charge to take a camper or caravan.
