Strickland spur track, Healesville/Marysville area MEDIUM

Strickland spur track and Narbethong forest, VIC

See more trips

Hi All,

I know it's months away, so I'm just looking for EOI's for the trip as circumstances may change from now to then. I recently did Strickland spur track in the dry and would like to do it again hopefully with wetter condition for a bit more of a challenge. So I'm looking at doing the tracks around the spur and then a play in the Narbie forest some time after lunch and also if you have some knowledge of the area or have travelled the tracks that would be great as everyone can have a go leading the group. I don't think it will be a medium/Hard trip level but it might be good if your rig was well setup.

Cheers,

David

lots of people keen for this trip might be worth discussing breaking into 2 groups with half hour between and catching up for lunch or 1 group 1 way the 2nd group do the same trip but reversed and meet for lunch

I think eight capable drivers and trucks is a good limit. A half hour break only means you don't get to meet half the people or you just bunch up after 10mins on the trail anyway.

You know two groups becomes one massive group two hours in when everybody bunches up, unless you leave several hours apart. Maybe you have a slow group and a hoon group? You know which one I'll be in. You also need two leaders. Has anyone here ever successfully run two groups at once? I'm consistently an advocate for smaller groups, unless someone can convince me the trip will be better with a huge crowd that moves really slowly or some other factors I'm not considering (other than being inclusive, which is obvious).
This should probably also be a discussion topic as every trip leader is being harassed to increase their group size despite they're initial decision to keep it civilized/manageable.
Let the tirade begin.

Have just read above comments and I can give my perspective of running 2 groups, as did it a couple of times when I was with the Pajero Club. Is very hard to make work, unless you have two completely different routes. Worked ok as one route was hard, the other easy so we didnt cross paths with the plan to meet at a designated place/time for lunch. This is where it got difficult as something generally happens that can cause one group to be held up, whether it be a breakdown or time spent recovering etc etc. To run 2 groups covering the same tracks, whilst fine in theory, doesnt work in my opinion. In regard to Jasons comment; This should probably also be a discussion topic as every trip leader is being harassed to increase their group size despite there initial decision to keep it civilized/manageable is something to seriously consider.

Whilst it might be great to have 12-15 vehicles on a trip, it just makes it a long hard day for everyone, not to mention how much pressure can be on the trip leader.Rightly or wrongly, I believe you can get away with a maximum of 10 vehicles on a EASY trip, by easy I mean a very basic trip without any real challenges. Anything with some challenging tracks, such as in Toolangi/Walhalla etc,a maximum of 6 vehicles is the number I tend to find works best.Guess it comes down to what the trip leader is comfortable with, but might be worth having a discussion and getting various opinions.

After initial thoughts of 2 groups on this trip because of so many people keen to go and then recently running my first trip I must say I agree with Allan, no more than 6 or 7 on a hard trip, we had 9 on my recent trip and although it worked out ok on the day that was only because no winching was needed, JUST, it could have easily turned into a really long day. As far as 2 groups I see Allans and Jasons point and it more than likely wouldn't work.

I think I will check the diary over the next few days and post up another trip to the same location, once I have sorted a couple of dates I will post it up to see what suits the majority

Dont go breaking the Disco Matt as it is only a couple of weeks before we do the Border Track. Also remember they are doing some fire burns up there over the next couple of weeks & quite a few tracks will probably be closed.

it certainly wont be before Border trk. No trips before then to many things to do and no time to fix any oops, still trying to find time to get the front diff done before then but doubt there will be time, also needs a gas tune before we go. running ok but consumption is up by 10%

Hi All,
Just reminder the trip is only a week and half away, if anyone knows wether that can't make it, now is a good time to revise your plans as there is a bit of interest in the trip.

And also just to clarify my position on two groups, I'm of the option that I am only leading one group and I'm sure we will meet up with other 4x4's on the track anyway.
I'll post an update of weather etc a couple of days before the trip and if haven't already try and read the trip guide that was posted by 4wd trip it has a wealth of info.
Cheers David

Hi All. Was lucky enough to jump as soon as someone pulled out. I hope it will be as challenging at Jasons Toolangi tri[ was in February. Regarding the two group idea- I agree it is very difficult and rarely works. Also difficult when running larger groups as everything slows down to a grinding (boring) halt. The only time in the past I have seen two groups work well is when a set route had been determined and one group starts one end, and the other starts at the other end, and they meet in the middle (somewhere undetermined) for lunch, and then continue in opposite directions (this also makes for good war-stories over lunch). This is only good for pre-determined routes (and trips such as desert runs) and does not work for general explore-days. Anyway- Just food for thought. See you all on the 12th.

was a fun day out and a big thanks Dave for organizing it.

had plenty of laughs with a fun group with tracks ranging from easy/medium to a pretty challenging last track once we hit Joe's spur track.

who's up for it again after a bit of rain?

winch, diff locks & recovery gear essential :)
