Fire danger - a few things to remember when 4wd and camping

Forum > 4WD Guides & Tips

Hi everyone! Hope you had a wonderful start to the New Year. Just want to put out a timely reminder to everyone heading out on trips with the extreme temperatures to be vigilant and responsible about fire risk. It's a real threat to us out in the bush but we can mitigate the dangers and do our part to try to prevent being caught in a deadly situation.

When you're out 4wding remember your vehicle is generating a lot of heat and not getting much airflow to cool things down. Your exhaust will be blazing hot so when you pull up for a coffee break or at camp make sure you aren't parking over tall grass as it can ignite.

Camp fires - make sure you obey the rules about where they can be, ensure that you aren't lighting a fire if it's a total fire ban day and MAKE SURE IT'S EXTINGUISHED BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

Carry a fire extinguisher in your vehicle! It could save your vehicle or yours and others lives.

Keep an eye out for thunderstorms. Many bushfires are sparked by dry lighting.

And also when you are planning your trip in areas that carry a fire risk have early exit and contingency plans. Know in advance the quickest route to a major road or to a river where you can shelter. And if you are caught without any directions to escape the area head for the lowest ground possible.

You can also check Fire Danger rating. For example, you can find out if it's total fire ban.

Stay safe and happy wheeling!
