hi all,

i'd like to compile a list of places where people can go and camp in the snow during the closed season.

it doesn't have to be limited to 4wd tracks but i guess they are mostly only accessible via 4wd anyway.

if anyone has suggestions it'll be much appreciated if you could reply with details such as;

general location - eg: matlock, mt sarah, mt terrible . . .
specific location - eg: longitude/latitude or at end of this track...
accessibility - eg: 4wd only
size of camping area - eg: 1-2 cars, 4-5 cars etc, f
type of camping - eg: car based camping or walk in only
general description - eg: flat open area or nestled among lots of trees
altitude - eg: 1200m, 1400m, 1600m
likely depth of snow - eg: approx 10cm or 50cm, between june-aug or only during cold snaps
any nearby facilities - eg: toilets, fuel, shops etc
nearby attractions - eg: towers, huts, snow fields, etc

i also hope to run a few snow camping trips this season if anyone is interested.

cheers

Probably be lookin in the areas from Jamison down to Matlock and across to Mt Useful.
Tracks in these areas are mostly open, especially the main road which still get some good snow.
You may have to run a few trips, looks like everybody wants to go.
I'd be happen to run a snow trip or 2 if it helps.

I'll start and also interested in following this post.

Site: Thomastown Campground -37.457268, 146.741981
Area: Around Airbuckle Junction. Tamboritha Rd Between Licola and Mt Howitt
Accesibility: Can probably get in an AWD sort of thing in the dry but wouldnt attempt it in winter.
Size of Camping Area: Pretty Spacious. there's an open area near the creek where you could fit probably about 6-8 cars
Type of Camping: Car Based
General Description: There's multiple separate sites under some Gumtrees but there's also a couple of big open areas without shade closer to the creek.
Altitude: ~1270 mts
Likely depth of snow: I wouldn't be sure about the ammount. but if you keep driving up to Airbuckle junction the make a right on Moroka Rd, there's some non-official spots that are higher in altitude and more chances of getting snow
Nearby Facilities: There's a Longdrop at the campsite, Fuel/Groceries is about 40Ks back at Licola Caravan Park
Nearby Attractions: Moroka Hut, The Pinnacles, Billy Goats Bluff, Multiple Hikes around, Rivers, There's a carpark at the gate on Mt Howitt Rd where there's plenty of snow usually

thanks Ed,
exactly what I was looking for.

and thanks to all those who have expressed interest so far. It's great to see such interest.

And I've realised I didn't make it clear that my idea was for this thread to purely be a list of snow campsites, and that expressions of interest could be done under separate threads in the Trip Ideas section. I figure that will make it easier for people to read over the coming years. So from now on could people just list potential campsites.

thanks
