Toolangi to Healsville MEDIUM / HARD

Toolangi, VIC

A fun day out to tackle some of the harder tracks, nothing too extreme or car breaking (hopefully) will start at Rocky Track and go from there.

There will be opportunity to try some serious challenging and very hard tracks for those that want to and for those who don't we will provide a go around.

All going well I hope to head over toward Healsville by afternoon to do some exploring with the plan to be heading home by 5.00pm at the latest

Hey Matt, not a real lot of interesting stuff heading towards Healesville, especially with the track closures, but think the tracks you have planned in Toolangi will keep everyone entertained. Are you planning to do Not Much Help Tk?.
24 Aug 2016
Trip Leader Matthew (discomatt)
haven't even looked at the map and list of closures yet, been flat out with work...
Was wanting to head toward Healesville to do Strickland spur but will decide what tracks over the next week and then make the final call on the day depending weather and what others want to do.
Any advice or thoughts from anyone would be fantastic!!
I know George will be keen to do the hardest tracks we can find

Hi Allan
As much as I'd like to take credit for the video above as yes it was a great drive, walking track isnt always that easy.

I ventured on up to toolangi last night for a night run amd even though i now have a twin locked auto pootrol on 35s i didnt make it up to the top.

Walking track in its current state is very moist. Amd with the rocky terrain and moist terrain it proved to be a little too difficult for the pootrol last night.
Rather than winching my way up it i decided to just turn around after several attempts.

Given the track conditions, every time i made another attempt it would send me either closer to a tree or sliding sidways towards the edge of the track.

Given the fact that it was my last track for the night i made an executive decision to stop where i was attempt a u turn (dangerous on this track as can cause rollover) and turned back down.

I got furthest up it though as the other vehicles fromt diff decided to let go so he was stuck mid way up in 2 wheel drive.

If my bighorns had more than 35%tred it may have been a different story.
If antony is viewing this thread i got stuck where you did last time we were out together mate ;)
The terrain is nice and slippery!

What other tracks did you end up doing and how hard would you rate them??
28 Aug 2016
George (Georgie_Kyro)
Hey Matt
Didnt do any other tracks other than walking track and rocky track.
Rocky tracks step up about 1/3 of the way up it was the only time i was stopped in my tracks on it and had to give it a fair crack to climb that step up. I think i managed to get it on the 3rd attempt.

The only reason why i found it to be like this is because of the wet conditions and not really a fan of my tires current wear amount at 35%

These tracks are so great to drive and very difficult in drier conditions yet in the wet they are a complete winch job.

Not so much rocky even though its turning to shi@t but walking track in the wet is absolutely ridiculous.

Mim 100% pete would love them both.
In the dry i got my money on him completing both without the need of a winch.
In the wet not so much, though he does seem to have newish hardcore off road tyres so may be a different story on walking track ;)

No news yet Matt but am going to check on Wednesday. As I said to you the other week, am starting to get a little annoyed but hopefully the wait will be worth it.

WITHDRAWN from Trip - Reason: Have to work next weekend fella's.
Apologies but you'll see me the week after for those going to cobaws !
Thought id cancel as soon as i found out to ensure the spot fills quickly.
Went up to toolangi again last night amd smashed up some tracks.
Rocky is looking pretty mean in the moist conditions and i was the only vehicle to get up unaided.
The other 2 (pootrol and 80 series) both had 1 locker and brand new 35 amd 36 inch simex and they both needed winching up the step up.

Best of luck have fun stay safe and please keep us posted on how you all went!
Bring recovery gear ;)

bugger you can't make it on the weekend but sometimes work gets in the way...
Looking forward to Rocky track !!! Will be interesting to see if I can get a Disco up it with no lockers on 32's :-0

Welcome to the trip Matt, hope it won't bore you to much, 37's and locked you would be able to do everything with your eyes shut. Looking at the maps and closed track list today, its hard to get a decent run without to many "roads" but there is quite a lot of rain forecast so we will suck it and see. Everyone is welcome to have some input on what tracks they want to do, we will start with rocky, wanted to start with Pauls creek tk. to ease into a nice climb but its another seasonal closure

Hey Matt,
sorry i can't help much with the tracks. haven't been out that way in years.
The rain Friday and showers Saturday means it's certainly going to be interesting out there... particularly without lockers and 35s :)
07 Sep 2016
Matt (Matt86)
G'day Guys, Not looking to go to hard Saturday more just get out and have a look I have never been to Toolangi before so it is also a bit of a scouting trip for me to see whats around. The rain might make it a bit interesting to. I picked up a rooftop map today and had a chat to the bloke and he reckons there are tracks for all sorts out there and also a few extreme ones but he did say to be careful as there are quite a few closed at the moment. Cheers see you all Saturday morning.
07 Sep 2016
Trip Leader Matthew (discomatt)
I have a list of all the closed tracks and we will not be doing any of them, that a given.
I was hoping for dry weather leading up to Saturday but no such luck so at least 1 track is off the list, as mentioned we will start with Rocky and see how we go with that, chances are that will be the hardest track of the day. It will all depend on how much rain and what everyone wants to do, nothing in concrete here...

Matt (Matt86)
Sounds Good Matt I'm pretty easy going I'll just follow what the group wants to do.

we will be OK, low tyre pressures, careful wheel placement and steady as you go, have done Rocky dozens of times but never after a massive dump the day before so it will be a very interesting day that's for sure

Hope you guys have a great day, even though it is going to be wet. Even the easy tracks get 'interesting' in the wet and Rocky is going to be a challenge if this rain continues, not to mention Lyndalls. Matt, have looked at a possible route if you have not finalised a plan yet.

Looking forward to the trip report with hopefully lots of pics.
09 Sep 2016
Trip Leader Matthew (discomatt)
What are your thoughts on route Allan? I have a rough idea but with this rain I am leaving it open and seeing how we go on Rocky. Lyndalls is on the cards but we will see... its not on my map, what track does it run of? I wish I had a better memory...
