Craigs Hut and Mansfield state forest EASY / MEDIUM

Mansfield State Forest/Alpine National Park, VIC

Camp Friday Night at Sheep yard Flat or you can meet there Saturday  morning 8.30am.  I did a trip here in February but plan to cut out one of the longer tracks to save some time. Tracks are mostly easy, plan is to go via Bindaree falls, Craigs Hut, a few other huts, check out some great scenery and enjoy a yarn around the camp fire.  Bring your own food, snacks and drinks and camping gear. Your 4wd must have low range, mud or all terrain tyres & spare (no highway tyres). Rated recovery points, snatch strap/recovery kit, tyre deflator and air compressor are also required.  Contact me if you are unsure of anything.

Last fuel is at Mansfield I'd say a full tank or about 500 highway km's worth will be plenty.

Cant believe nobody has joined your trip Andrew. This trip would be perfect for those new to 4wding as Andrew being a relatively 'new comer' to the 4wd world would not be taking you places that would 'push you beyond your limits/boundaries'.

The area he plans to visit has some great scenery as well as some interesting HC huts along with some easy/medium tracks. Do yourself a favour and seriously consider joining his trip, especially those less experienced 4wders and those who have not seen Craigs Hut.

Will most likely come in my patrol and with my mate who just brought a hilux, his new to 4wding and has never been to the high country! He has 2inch lift and 33 muddies.
As long as the tracks aren't too easy this will be a fun trip :)

Hi Rob, welcome to the trip there are some good tracks depending on your definition of too easy there are no extreme or difficult tecnical tracks or big bogholes ... could you get your mate with the Hilux to sign up and register for the trip so he doesn't miss out the maximum cars on this trip is going to be 5 to alow to get the tracks done comfortably

Well said Allan, last trip there was good but a bit rushed on the first day so I'm not doing Cairns Creek track this time so we can see more of the good stuff. Cheers

All Good!, It's very easy to find Head towards Mt Buller from Mansfeild about 3 and a half kms past Merrijig turn right on Howqua track there is a big sign that says Sheepyard flat follow that(16kms) to the end you will go over a little bridge and you are there takes about 45 mins from Mansfield have a look on google maps but it's well signed... there are spots to the right and left who ever of us gets there first just pick out a spot with fire pit that's flat and enough room for 5 cars/tents

Looking forward to it too Luke!! It's About 3.5 Hours from Mornington so I reckon would be the best part of 4 for you, Jo has to work but her boss may let her off at 2.30 so we hope to leave by 3.... who ever gets there first has the responsibility of picking a spot and getting the fire going lol

hey guys, im new to this forum and also new to 4x4, im really interested in coming along however my car is pretty much stock, it does have stock AT tyres but not sure how good/bad they are

Hi Alan, The tracks I'm Planning to do are suitable for the less experienced there is nothing to difficult, not sure about your tyres when I bought my car it had Goodyear AT wranglers on it they weren't much better than highway tyres, you need tyres with a strong side wall that are designed to run on low pressure you will need Rated front recovery points and recovery hitch for the rear (factory tow points and tow ball not acceptable) It's likely we won't be using them but mandatory for safety reasons also a CB radio- handheld unit is fine. Hope that doesn't sound to harsh but better being safe than sorry. If you don't have this stuff and not sure what to buy ask here on the forum I've seen a few FJ Cruiser Drivers on here and sure they'd be happy to give you good advise. Well I hope you can get all this and join the trip!

no worries, I suggest you go to a 4x4 shop like ARB Ironman or TJM ask for rated recovery points, rear recovery hitch and a decent recovery kit don't get the cheap shit and get some decent AT tyres with aggressive tred and hard side wall something like Coopers, Bridgestone or BF Goodrich then you will be good and safe to go on a trip
