Walhalla - Lake Thomson area exploration trip MEDIUM / HARD

East of Lake Thomson, VIC

Trip postponed to January.

Trip to explore the east of Lake Thomson which has a lot of great 4WD tracks including the famous Deep Creek1 track and Fullton track. I have not been up there myself in this area but from what I hear and know the tracks are quite demanding and worth to come back for more. If you guys know of any good tracks  let me know otherwise we will try to do as many tracks as possible off the map.

Meeting point is outside Erica pub at 9:30am and departure 10am sharp. From there we will head east to Walhalla and then north onto the tracks. You will need as a minimum 33" good all terrain tires and a lifted 4WD as we will drive along creek beds and do some rock crawling. The night we will spend either at O'Tooles or west where are more campgrounds located. Campfire and spinning some good yarn is a must - bring your camping chair and blondes and we can have a good time watching the bush telly.

Next day we can either decide to stay in the area or head north west towards Woods Point or north east to Jamison Licola Road after we covered some more tracks. I am planning to head back from the ranges around 3pm after lunch.

These are the rules. No cowboys, no drunks. Kids and partners are welcome. make sure your fourby is mechanically good and will not break down. Bring warm clothes as the nights can get cold and always play safe.

Cheers Joe

Just previously did a trip to Walhalla. Deep Creek 1 is tame, Iconic but not necessarily worth venturing too.

I can highly recommend Fultons, it has some good river crossings. I recommend going Williamson spur to Flat Track up to O'Tooles.

Thanks Ricky. I am in the process to put the tracks together. I have been reading trough the forum section and your comments about DC1 only yesterday.
How long did it take you to drive up DC1? trying to understand how much to pack in for the first day. And are the river crossings deep/fast flowing?

All cars welcome. I like Jeeps but have seen other cars doing great wheeling. Hope to get this trip full.

Jarryd (J-radical)
Hi All.
got recomended to join by ryan haha.

really keen to tag along. im in a gen3 pajero with 3 inch lift and 32 inch all terrains.

not the most capable truck. but i have plenty of clearance because of the independant suspension front and rear (more clearance than a patrol on 35s)
but i lack flex and dont have any lockers. also no winch.

im a confident driver. used to do some competition stuff back when i had my land rover. also organised a heap of trips in clubs before.
now i just take it easy with the pajero and drive smarter. i keep up with all my mates in cruisers and patrols.

dont want to be a pain though and i saw requirements stating 33s and a winch so if you want to kick me from the trip no hard feelings.

also mught have my brother interested (4.8l Gu patrol on 33s with winch). trying to get him to sign up with 4wd trip and join this trip.

cheers

Trip Leader Joe (Joe_JKU)
Hi Jarryd, no worries for the winch. Someone can help out if required. Re tire size, we will see how you go. Clearance is fine but also to consider is how well you roll over obstacles with smaller tire size. I trust you are experienced and will manage everything fine. see you on the trip.

Joe, have you come to a decision on roughly what tracks we are doing yet?
03 Jan 2016
Trip Leader Joe (Joe_JKU)
Hi Ryan, not yet mate. I still want to go up DC1 even if it is not what it used to be anymore. I will come up with the tracks by the end of the week.

Has anyone a chain saw to bring along to the trip? comes in handy for trees and firewood.

Hi Joe.

dont have a chainsaw but i have a heap of merbau decking cut up and ready to burn. should make good firewood. so ill supply the firewood for the trip.

are we just camping the saturday night?

Hi Jarryd, bring it with you should be good.

yes camping only Sat night.

Also with the amount of rain predicted, I'm guessing that the river crossings will be up.

cheers for the heads up. ive got a snorkel on the paj and a shit load of lift.

think itll be over bonnet?

pretty sure diff breathers are fine and run up to engine bay but dont have gearbox breathers run up i dont think. reckon i need to worry?
04 Jan 2016
Ryan (Mac)
Yeah you'll be fine
04 Jan 2016
Trip Leader Joe (Joe_JKU)
River crossing on the list with Fulton creek TK probably will have some water running. but nothing too hard I would expect. I would be surprised with water over the bonnet. Had this only once in the middle of winter. Be prepared for very steep inclines and declines (maybe some change of underwear required ;) ) I have attached a note from my rooftop map.

Here is the list for day1

DC1
DC 4 or 5 to be decided
Fulltons creek TK
Williamson spur TK/rd
Pheasant TK
Merrington TK
Williams spur TK
Flat's TK
O'tools camp.

Depending on how we go on DC TK's and Fulltons we can cut out the Pheasant and Merrington loop and finish the Williams Spur TK to get earlier to camp.

Day 2 I want to decide with you guys on the tracks. We have a few options here. to Licola, to Woods Point or stay in area and explore various relics from the mining. It also depends on the fuel situation.

That reminds me, no fuel in Walhalla or Erica. Next fuel is Licola at the General Store for a premium. Please fill up before heading up to Erica.

Looking forward to this trip.

Sounds like a mint set of tracks Joe! Can't wait

And I'd guess the best plan for Sunday will involve a campfire on Saturday night and everyone standing around a map on a bonnet throwing ideas around.

are these the tracks we are going to be doing? because theres no way my paj will get through that without damage lol. i have little to no flex and no lockers. im fine with deep water and steep hills but ive got no chance on rock steps like that haha. maybe if i still had the land rover.

if its like this then i may as well bail. or ill just be holding you guys up.

From what I've been told, you'll be fine. A mate of mine did the DC tracks only a month or so ago. He reckons you should get thru without any damage. But the good thing about the DC tracks is you can always take an alternative and meet at the end if you want.

what was your mate driving?
and didnt look like there were chicken tracks :/
04 Jan 2016
Trip Leader Joe (Joe_JKU)
Reckon you will be fine. The rock ledge is on dc1 and this TK has been graded. You can bail on the track if you really can't make it and meet at the end. I think I have seen a Colorado in the video if he can do it I reckon you can do it. Maybe a little track build will help here too.

Btw I don't have lockers either but have done ledges like this. All part of the fun.

still time to do upgrades too ;)

righto.

well make sure you bring the cameras lol.

if i role my daily drive bouncin off a rock ledge, i want that shit on film lol.

Hi guys, this will be our first '4wd trip' trip, still quite green when it comes to 4wding but I have a strong truck that will take us anywhere an don't shy away from much. Have seen a few tracks in this area so, looking forward to it.
