Beginners Trip EASY / MEDIUM

Tallarook, VIC

Hi All.  This is a trip for beginners only. It will be on Saturday the 29th August.  The tracks will be easy to moderate.  We will be doing 2 X 2hr drives.  In addition, we will be doing some demonstrations on safe use of snatch straps, safe use of winches, safe vehicle recovery and different convoy procedures.  A few new members have been asking for this trip, so it is for newer people and the driving will be gentle and relaxed.  If you are a driver that wants a faster pace or is wanting to go ripping through bog holes, then this is not the right trip for you. This trip is purely for the inexperienced with tyres that are 33"or less.

Kelvin and myself will split the drives into two groups of 5 and go in different directions.  Only members of the site that have booked into the trip are welcome (please don't bring additional vehicles).

Please post any questions.  I have uploaded maps on how to get there in the files section.

Hi guys what recovery gear would be mandatory for this trip?

Hi All. Can't believe this booked out so fast. Can I get a rough idea if your thinking of camping out and doing the Sunday.
You dont have to camp out to do the Sunday (you can go home and return in the morning if you wish).

Yes Winston. At the very least, all members should at least have a snatch strap and rated shackles.

I forgot to mention in the trip write up- Rated recovery points front and rear are mandatory (not tie down points). If you are unsure of what you have, please feel free to email me. Kind regards Tony.

Pretty sure I'm covered for front and rear. Have a winch bar (no winch though) with tow points and will be buying a tow bar shackle for the trip.

Had a similar event with a snatch joined to a chain due to access distance up in Cairns. Shackle luckily hit the tailgate rather than through the rear screen.

Don't think we will be doing your loop Jason. Especially the Stoney Creek track. Will find a few gentler tracks.
Although I do want to run a Hard Trip though your loop later in September.

        Tony,

we will plan to do both days, depending on the Sunday plans. We won't be camping however :)

Front recovery points on and car booked in for its towbar (overdue) so should be all covered

        Thanks for setting this up

Hi everyone, I have amended the trip to put "Winch" as Recommended. I understand that this trip is for beginners. However, winch is one of the most important (long term) accessories any 4wders should invest. They are getting cheaper and cheaper. If you can fit a winch before this trip, it would be great. If not, that's ok too. It's definitely for your own safety.

Thank you for joining the beginner trip. If possible, can you tell us whether you will be coming for 1 day (Sat) or 2 days (Sat & Sun) and whether you will be camping on Sat night or not.

Can only do the Saturday trip because my wife can't swap a shift with someone on Sunday :(
Will have a chainsaw with me, after me having to turn around 3 times in the Cathedral ranges 2 weeks ago because of fallen trees, i had enough of it and bought one.

Our apologies for those looking forward to camping out. There will be plenty more trip coming up. See you all on the Saturday. Kind Regards- Tony.

How come use make not so many rigs? Wouldnt the more be better?
        22 Jul 2015
        Winston (Winston_FJ) Premium Member
More rigs = more stopping to make sure everyone gets through safely and more videos being taken and potentially more recoveries. Let's say you tackle a challenging track that with 5 cars and no recoveries takes about an hour. The lead vehicle goes through first and runs through it in sections. After each challenging section typically they will pull up at a safe place and get out of the vehicle and walk back and be on the radio to assist guiding the next vehicle through if needed and also to warn the following vehicles if there is a hold up or hazard.

Now picture how long it would take with 10 cars. It would be more than double the time.

Then imagine if you had to do recoveries.

        Trip Leader Tony (le Dakar)
I agree with Winston. Unfortunately more vehicles become unmanageable, to the extent that participants then start complaining about the constant stopping and starting throughout the day.
It is up to the Trip Leader to set a limit of participating vehicles that they feel comfortable with. Some Trip Leaders on this site limit their trips to 4 vehicles, while others are comfortable with 12-15.
It should also be noted that every member of this website has the opportunity to lead a trip themselves (and set their own limit of vehicles that can attend). If every member lead just 1-2 trips per year we would have hundreds of trips to choose from.

Out of curiosity why don't more people lead trips? Is it a PIA? I really have no idea what's involved.
My time to learn Mark- What is a PIA ?
I think there are people that underestimate their ability to run a trip. A few weeks ago an easy trip was posted up to WoodPoint. Just a wander around and it still filled up. My advice to anyone is to try running an easy trip first. It could be wander around one of our many state forests, with lunch at a picnic ground. Once you get your confidence up, then you can pick more challenging destinations. Also, don't think for one minute that we automatically pick trips where we already know an exact route. I will spend one day the weekend before our Beginners trip driving around the area and working out an exact route so that the Beginners trip goes smoothly. It takes a lot of planning, but like everything else in life- You get get out of it what you put in in the first place. I would be happy to help any person plan a day trip- especially if it was their first.
        Cheers.

For those just starting out with recovery gear I just bought an 11t snatch and 2x4.7t shackles, a 5t tow hitch and an 8t equaliser bridle for 150 all up. The gear isn't that expensive. It's a lot cheaper than the consequences of not having it.

Hi guys will there be some people that could share their compressor to refill before the hit sealed roads? I haven't bought one yet - it's on my to do list but just haven't been able to afford it yet.

For anyone that needs it at the start I have Staun deflators set to 18psi that all are welcome to use.

I just put a brand new winch bar on with a brand new winch, did it on my own and it was a pita of a job to do.
The winch bars were stored on top of each other and the brackets that go on the car first had bend brackets so had to bend them back by hand.
First had to take the old bullbar off ond the wanted to put the bracket on and one of the legs was also bend sideway's :(
Out came the prybar and with a almighty kick i homed the bracked in one go (holes lined up perfectly :)
Then on went the winch and stupid me forgot to put the cable on the winch, so had to do that after i put the bar on the bracket.
Once finished, i noticed a 2Cm drop of the front so checked the shockers and have to replace them this weekend (replacing them all four) also have to wind the torsion bar up to get the front to the right hight.
So moral of the story is that i saved a couple of hundred dollars but have bruises and cuts everywhere, but will do it again just because of the satisfaction of a job well done :)
Will post some photo's this weekend.

Hahaha. Yeah gotta laugh or cry. A certain member of this site decided to go on a solo drive (against my advice) and got himself stuck in a bog hole near whittlesea that really didn't look too bad but put him pretty much up to the chassis in mud. I had told him if he ran into trouble then to call me. Well at 5.30 this morning I got a call asking for help. Jumped in the truck and drove there and after some seriously hard tugs got him out. Then smoke started pouring out from under the hood.

On a positive note we used thoroughly rated recovery gear and proper techniques.

Wow. Saw the video. A shame it cost you a clutch. A couple of quick questions-
1- What was he doing in the bog on the side of the road in the fist place?
2-What were you using to attach to snatch straps together (looks like a large stick) ?
        Tony

We had a winch extender and my snatch and wound one through the other with the block of wood to prevent a lock tight of both straps.

Hmmmmm. I hope he did not decided to drive of the main road there just to rip up some grass (that would be the silly behaviour that gives us a very bad name and leads to more tracks being closed). In addition, that behaviour has cost you some serious coin. :-(
Also- Safer alternative to joining two straps is to use a rolled up magazine. If a loop breaks, the magazine will fly through the air for a short distance before opening up and falling to the ground. Using the large stick you had still wind up in your rear windscreen or his front windscreen (depending on which loop broke).

Great example - NOT. Both Tony's are being very diplomatic but looking at all the ripped up grass it seems as though it maybe a bit of a 'playground' for those redneck 4wders; sorry I am not very diplomatic & to be perfectly frank, that person would not be welcome on any of my trips. I would suggest you remove the video Winston.

On a brighter note, those attending this trip with Tony will learn heaps as well as how to be responsible 4wders. Am sure you will all have a very enjoyable and informative day.

I feel that you have all missed what the video
was actually relaying. It was about how someone
helping another and them loosing their clutch

but has let a thrill get the better of him. I'm sure that we
have all had these moments. Don't really think this is the place anyway
to express these comments openly. I believe we need to educate
them in the right protocols and ethics of 4wd. I feel sad that one of our own

We all need to educate each other

Please don't get me wrong but I don't condone what was done however the video was
put up so we could see how someone blew their clutch retrieving a vehicle.
I know that the actions of someone has caused another damage. Hopefully
this person will think before he does something irresponsible next time. I'm
upset that another person has lost his vehicle being kind hearted

I cannot comment on how this person got stuck there or what

Hi all, please try to get hold of a compressor for airing up at the end of the day. Compressors may get too hot if it needs to pump up 2 cars continuously. I melted my hose last time when i helped pump up another car. You can easily get one from any auto shop.
Also chk if you have got a jack and wheel brace for changing spare tyre in case of puncture.

That's awesome to hear the NP300 performed well. I'd love to see more photos and videos. If you wish, we can feature it in our monthly newsletter about this trip.

I have to say a BIG THANK YOU to both Tony and Anthony who could help fill my spot at the last minute to help out. Tony has done an awesome job preparing for the trip. There are so much to share, and so much to learn from real experience, not textbook or from magazine.

Honestly, we (true 4wders) would love to see the tough side of a new 4wd. I am very glad to see Nissan is willing to let you take it to offroad.

I'd love to run more beginner / introduction trip in Nov when most of the tracks are opened and warmer. Please stay tuned.

Awesome vehicle Tony. I was quite impressed watching the traction control working coming up Mountain track up to Mt Hickey. It seemed to do it the easiest and allowed for a slow gentle climb. Gday all. I know this was discussed a while ago but i just want to clarify things. I am the guy that winston recoverd a couple weeks back when he fried his clutch. Now i know use all believe in 4wders doing the right thing and being in the right place. I totally agree with that. Theres more to the story. Yes i know i was bogged in a hole that i shouldnt of been in and there was a reason i was there. I got ancall from a bloke i know who was stuck in there and all i was doing was recovering him when i fell into the hole without relising and since i was trying to recover i was on the gas trying to get him out witch dug me in further. And him being in a stock navara no experience he couldnt get me out. And yes i know use will all say that he was doing the wrong thing in a place he shouldnt be and yes i agree but he was given the car as a present of his old ladt 2 days befor and couldnt help himself going out for a drive and showing of to his misses for browni points (we have all done that) being his first 4wd he had no idea on wer to go what to do so he decided to get of the gravel and have some fun on the grass when he got stuck. Believe me or not thats ur oppinion bit i came to rescue him from being stuck for 3 hours after i finaly got rescued from mt dissapointment on a very stead rocky hill (that was completly legal to be on) that snapped my winch rope twice and having to get someone of a recovery site to come over an hour to rescue me. I was stuck on this hill for 5 hours after trying to rescue myself then waiting for this awsome guy to come and reacue me. Then heading down there to rescue this guy who shouldnt of been there. I was then stuck there for a further 4 hours until winston the legend came to my rescue witch i ow a hell of a lot to. The point im getting at is i may only be 22 but i still stick by the rules. Trust me after being stuck myself for 5 hours the last thing i wanted to do was joy ride on a little grass patch of a gravel road for "shits and giggles"
I understand why use wer all upset at someone doing this and just wanted to clarify i was only trying to do the right hing and hope that i am able to remaine a member on this page as it offers hreat oppertunitys to get out have some fun and meet some extremely awsome people such as winston. Thanks

I did go for a solo drive. Started as just an easy cruise just to get out the house i went down a track witch then became a steap down hill witch i went down quite easy then to find that it was a dead end and had to go back up witch i could only drive 5 meters up being about a 50 meter hill i had no chance winch up 3/4 and rope snapped twice making that unusable. Diffed out on 35s 4 inch lift (stupid place to be alone yes i no. Didnt plan on doing anything hard by myself). It was after that that i got a call saying this other bloke was stuck so once i was recoverd i went out to recover him on my way home. But plans dont always go that way

@Winston, @Stephen, thanks for letting us know the actual details. A good take out.... never go solo drive to an unknown area at night.
