High Country Cup Weekend EASY / MEDIUM

Alpine National Park, VIC

Hi. Thought I'd run a trip through the High Country.

The start point is a camp ground I've been wanting to try out. I will be there from late Friday arvo. There are drop toilets and a small lake/billabong there.

We will be leaving here Saturday morning about 9:30am, so if you can't make it up Friday night you could come on Saturday morning.

We'll be heading north from Arbuckle Junction on Saturday towards Zeka Spur, stoppping for a walk to Bryces Gorge then onto Wonnangatta Station for the night.

Between Sunday and Tuesday we'll leave Wonnangatta heading south on to Hummfray River Trk, then head north to Rileys Hut, making our way to Lake Cobbler Trk, then heading south west to Lake Cobbler. If we have time we'll head over to Mt Speculation, otherwise, we'll just head to Craigs Hut and take the back way out to Mansfield.

The plan is for a relaxed long weekend drive through the area, as I haven't been to Wonnangatta for years and never been to Lake Cobbler.

I've classed it an easy/medium, as I don't expect to encounter anything too hard, and for it to be a bit more of a family weekend away (though my family is not coming).

Recovery gear is a must and a winch is good. I have a winch and likely a few others also will, so it's not essential.

Some lift and good tyres always help. A/T's ok - NO ROAD TYRES THOUGH.

Make sure you have enough beer, fuel, water and food as there will be none after Licola.

I have attach a gpx file for the planned route.

    Hi Jon,
I have 72lt fuel + 20 in Gerry can would this be enough for trip.

I would assume so. The route says ~300km. Add say add 60% for low ranging that is 480km total. My Jeep on a good day is around 550km full. So I'm bringing a 13L RotopaX to add to my full tank as I suspect I'll need it! I might stack on a smaller RotopaX just in case. Cheers.

Hey Damien, I would think that would be enough fuel, I've got the standard Patrol tanks plus 2 x 20L Jerries and I never really touch the Jerries. If you needed them then so be it. There will also be about 100kms on main roads. Licola to Zeka is about 80kms.

Hi marcel. Trip sounds great. I haven’t been to Wonnangatta Station before (I know, shock horror) but have been to cobbler and it’s awesome. How long are you thinking of staying at Wonnangatta?

Hey Paul, The plan is to get to Wonnangatta late arvo setup camp and have a look around. There can be some time in the morning as well if people want to. We'll only be spending one night there but I do want to have a look around and see what its like now and let others have a look around. Grant hasn't been there either.
